Hi guys, I'm a laptop noob and bought a second hand gaming laptop a little on impulse so have a few questions. I've bought a Sager P170Hm second hand. it has what I was told was a intel i7 2920XM processor and a Radeon HD 6970. It also has an upgraded screen 8GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD.

first question is in my WEI it states Genuine INTEL (R) processor 0 @ 2.4 GHZ. Why doesn't it say 2920 XM have I been had?

Secondly can I play BF3 on high settings ?

Thirdly. What are my upgrade options?

Apologies for my lack of grammar I'm typing on my iPad

    regards
    Freddy

From what I see when I research it, the i7 2920XM should be a 2.5 ghz processor with turbo up to 3.5 ghz. I am not sure if this is an issue with the operating system not identifying it correctly, or if it is actually the processor. If it is the processor, yes, you have been had. Overall, it looks like a respectable computer anyways, and it should play any game you throw at it with good settings. If you ignore the anti-aliasing, it should be able to nearly max out on everything.

Upgrade options: It would be best for you to contact a reseller for this. Many resellers will upgrade your computer for you, so if you have the cash and you aren't experienced with modifying laptops it would be a good choice. Also, the resellers would be best able to identify the capabilities of your laptop to determine if or if not it can be upgrade.

    Hope this helps :)

I've had the 6970... It falls a bit short and that's why I sold mine to upgrade. To be honest it all depends how much you've paid for it hopefully now not too much.

You should be able to play BF3 on moderate settings, I don't think you will be able to max out your graphics settings with that game.

Upgrades are very easy to perform on these laptops, so long as you have basic common sense in computers and electronics (don't disassemble while battery and AC adapter are still connected, etc.)
You should be able to upgrade anything on this system save for the mainboard itself really, you are a little limited on CPU selection but anything within Sandy Bridge/ Ivy Bridge should work fine.

Engineering Samples should not be allowed to the general public and are not covered under any warranties what-so-ever, so you probably got a little hosed on that deal as far as CPU goes.

Top-of-the-shelf GPU at the moment. Unparalleled graphics processing power with no current comparable competition..

already available through either Dell, some Swedish reseller (more info to be announced on monday) and eurocom´s ebay shop "upgradeyourlaptop". price is somwhere in the range of 500-650 USD (including the whole kit with GPU, x bracket, heatsink, etc.). as for compatibility with the HM series, nothings for sure yet, but im pretty optimistic, since the difference with the current EM series is minimal/cosmetic at best.

    cheers

u mean as in compatibility? well yeah, vBios vs. laptop MB Bios/EC would be the only hurdle left to take at the moment. for that, well just have to wait and see what the resellers report.

    cheers
