Hello. I have been reading and thinking about my next laptop for months now and I think I've decided on the 8662 with one hesitation.
I'm hoping you can put my mind at ease so I can pull the trigger.
In my experience with other laptops the ones that have intake from the side and exhaust to the back (or intake rear-exhaust side) have better airflow in a wider range of use scenarios.
I have a habit of putting a throw pillow in my lap and a laptop on top of the pillow but in machines with this design that often leads to fans kicking in to turbo and getting quite loud.
I have a laptop cooling pad I quite like but even the best of those are a pain in the booty to have to haul around. So I'd rather not have to worry about it (or anything else for that matter) if I'm about to shell out some major $$$ for a new machine.

Honestly? You shouldn't be putting ANY laptop on top of a throw pillow during use, let alone a gaming laptop with pretty specific thermal capacity.
Laptops should be on a solid flat surface at all times to get proper airflow. -

This notebook needs to rest on a flat, hard surface. If the intakes are blocked, the HDD will heat up and the bottom gets quite hot.
This is not a "laptop", it's a notebook, and theirs a big difference there. Given a proper resting place, you have no need to be concerned with ventilation or cooling. -

The m860tu doesn't qualify for desktop replacement. Kevin Jack had it right. Notebooks are still portable, but shouldn't be used on your lap/a pillow/carpet etc.
-
Just put one/two books under it, instead of a pillow.
-
Here's what I do when I use a laptop on my bed:
1- Pillow on top of my legs for comfort.
2- Large hardcover (thin) book on top of the pillow (usually big enough for all the rubber stops to sit on the book). Large hardcover thin books are usually children books or you can even use a binder as long as its hardcover and big enough for the laptop to rest on.
Your computer should be fine as long as nothing blocks the fan intakes or any other vents. -
This thread brought back memories of my wife frying 3 motherboards in her old HP laptop before I figured out that she was doing that exact same thing.
I was actually blamming HP quality until I figured it out. -
OMG.
Cant believe people still do not care to do a small effort, in order to not damage their systems.
Like everyone has said:
Notebooks should only be used on a clean, hard, flat surface.
This is especially important for ANY gaming notebook.

OMG!!! ZOIKS!!!
Calm down...
Guess I'm on my own WRT the intake/exhaust on the sides being a better design thing. -
I recommend just getting an inexpensive lapdesk (pretty much a pillow with a flat hard surface mounted on it). -
Concerned with Sager 8662's fan placement
