Hey guys, despite the fact that I've been following these forums for a very long time, this is my first post here. And with the 8800, I'm finally ready to order an NP5792 from XOTIC PC. However, my budget stops at right around $2200 (I know, a bit low), so I need some help with deciding on what I should settle on. I need Vista Home Premium, so that already puts me at $2100.
The upgrade to WUXGA is obviously out of the question (although the lower resolution may come in handy for future gaming anyway).
I was planning on getting the 2.2GHz processor, but with the 4GB RAM deal, I'm now considering going for an upgrade in RAM instead. How much of an improvement is there from the 2.0GHz to the 2.2GHz processor?
My last question is about the hard drive: I think that I want 160GB, but is the upgrade from 5400RPM to 7200RPM worth it?
Thanks!

the 2.0 to 2.2 ghz CPU jump in speed is negligable--it is the increase in cache that is key. The performance gain will depend on the program, but that is one area I would spring for.
The upgrade from 5400rpm to 7200rpm is not worth it. the 7200 will reduce battery life and the minor speed increase, if any at all, will only be seen at boot up while your OS loads.
I wish they would offer 2gb in one slot with an open slot, rather than filling two slots with either two 1gb sticks or two 2gb sticks, allowing users to update later if they wish....dual channel ram really does not make that significant of a difference in real world applications--only memory benchmarks.
Personally, I am surprised the 8800 is that much more expensive than the 8700... -
Not much from 2.0 to 2.2 to be honest. With the RAM have you checked out how cheap notebook ram is? You can pick up 4GB 667 ram from newegg for about $110.00 +s/h, not bad to max your system out and uncrimp Vista.
In gaming you won't notice too much difference, the only time is when a level has to load you may notice a hit. Again you can pick up a notebook HDD the hitachi 7k200 120GB model 7,200rpm for about $100.00 depends if you want to do some swaping out yourself. Both the HDD and the ram are not hard to swap out yourself.
Just an idea. -
Hmm, I think that I might go for the upgrade in processors. Even though I would have two 1GB RAMs, I could still swap them out for 4GB of RAM in the future, although perhaps at slightly more of a loss than if I were to sell a single 2GB RAM or if I were to go for the 4GB RAM right now.
