Hello everyone,
I am going to order a Clevo P650SG soon, just wondering if anyone is using a cooling pad with it? Do you really need one? Just wondering.
-
i usually just get one just to help with angling the laptop but the cooler master notepal u3 (or u2 if you only want 2 fans) has helped quite a bit for my 670SG. you can adjust all fans under the intake and i've seen a solid 4-5 degree drop in games.

Yeah, If you plan on pushing the system for long periods of time, it couldn't hurt to have. At least if it even just elevates the system a bit, it will help with airflow.
-
It looks pretty nice too. Since it's an aluminum body, do you have any slippery issues? I mean, I don't really want my laptop to get slippery when I do anything. Thanks.
-
Oh not at all. I use it in bed as well and last thing I want is for it to slip. It has some grippy rubber and since the sager has rubber pads as well they stick quite well.
For everyday use I've had no issue and I move it frequently.

Ah, that's a good thing, since slippery issues can get annoying. I really like the U3, but I also like something like the cooler master x2 or x3 as well. I just don't really know if 1 big fan is better, or 3 smaller fans.

I like the fact that you can adjust the fan to sit right under the intake. It's also a lot slimmer and it can even act as a sling. It also looks a little more professional and fits in multiple settings.

I like that idea too. But the thing I am just kind of worried about is the effectiveness of its smaller fans, since it's only 80mm.
By the way, do you think the U3 Plus is too big for a 15 inch P650SG? Thanks. -

Usually the fan size is not the issue performance wise, it's that smaller fans are noisier.
-
true, but for these ones, i have to make sure they're even on since they're incredibly quiet.
-
Even on max speed?
-
Yeah, I often have to check whether or not I'm turning them up or down because I can't hear a difference lol. I've noticed a 3-4 degree drop, nothing too outlandish but it definitely helps in angling it for better air intake as well.
-
Lol, I guess noise is not a problem afterall. I am still debating whether to get something like Cooler Master's X series such as the X3, or the U series such as the U3 Plus.
By the way, The U3 Plus fits up to 19 inches. Is it too big for a 15 inch laptop like the P650SG? -
The u3 is the perfect size for a 17 inch. It's also a a more versatile one since laptops have different vent placement. I strongly considered the x but it's a bit too bulky for my taste and the vents are in the top and not in the middle for the 86xx models.

That's what I thought too. I mean, all USB laptop cooling pads will have similar cooling performance, right?
-
Depending on fan/intake vent placement. If you have a cooler blowing right in the middle of the case with no vents, it's going to do less good than having one blowing right into a vent. But in general, I'd say that's a fair assessment some just have a more versatility, different configuration, styling. Just don't expect 15 degrees off current temps is all lol.

Alright, time to buy a portable AC just to cool down my laptop, lol. I am not going to expect that much temperature, even a 5 degrees off would be good too. I guess you are right about the fan placement, I will probably go with the U3 Plus, since the U2 Plus seems to be a bit small for my laptop. Thanks for the help.

If temperatures are your primary concern, in addition to getting a cooling pad I would suggest limiting your frame rate in games as that can easily shave 10-15c off of your GPU temps, and 5-10c off your CPU temps, assuming you play games that is. If you don't, then I really wouldn't even worry about temps too much as they're likely going to be fine.
-
Temperature is not the most concern, but it would be nice if it drops a few degrees. I mainly just want it to angling the laptop a bit.
-
By the way, how's the aluminum on the Cooler Master U3 Plus? Is it sturdy? I feel like it's thin enough to bend it easily...

It's pretty sturdy. That, combined with limiting your frame rate will DEFINITELY bring down your temps a LOT. -
You can put bigger fans on the U3, if you wish. Those holes make bolting 120mm fans simple.
I chose variable speed fans and an external power supply to keep a USB free. A USB extention to an external USB on a power supply/strip would also work for the U3 fans... six fans. You can have a light show above (keyboard) and below.

I am not worrying about temperatures too much, but thanks for the tip.
Is it very sturdy? I head that some people reported that it vibrates while using it, and some people had it bent or snapped. Does that happen to you?Last edited: Sep 4, 2015 -

I suppose that depends on how you use and treat it (for bending or snapping). Not sure about the vibration, but most of the people I've talked to who have it say good things about it.

I haven't noticed any of those issues with it. -
Ok. Thanks. I guess those people are just abusing it.

If you deliberately set out to break it you can yes, but if you treat it with some respect it should last years.
Cooler pad needed for Clevo P650SG?
