I'd like to check with the pros here before I do anything...
One of the cooling fans stays on almost constantly (left side) even as both CPU & GPU temps stay in between 38-41C. I've read a few threads that point this out as well and apparently the solution is to flash the bios to an earlier version.
If I was confident about this I wouldn't post but here I am, seeing as other people are bricking their system by loading the wrong BIOS update makes me a little hesitant![]()
My bios version for the P170HM is 1.01.10
Suggestions/walk troughs are appreciated!
Thanks

When you say "on constantly" do you mean at max rpm? Left side is the CPU right?
-
I'd say about half speed, not sure which side has the cpu/gpu yet. I'll find out when I repaste with ICD7
-
What ec are you running OP?
Is it by chance 1.00.08?
You can keep the BIOS and just flash the ec only..
That is what I did and no more noisy fan CPU @idle. -
Kbc/ec 1.00.09
-
Where is that driver at?
-
Ok I figured it out and flashed the EC. I'll do some testing and report back later
-
So how difficult was it? And what are results?

If you have a Clevo based model, it's pretty simple. You just need to have an extra flash drive to create a bootable dos disk, drag and drop your Bios/EC files onto it, boot from it, and run the update.bat file. The full instructions are in the bios thread here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread.html
I finally updated my P150HM from one of the original versions to the newest Bios and EC this weekend without issues. It takes maybe 10 minutes to make a bootable drive and another 5 to update and reboot
-
Yay the EC 1.00.06 fixed this issue. The fan now behaves like the one on the right side: it turns on at a slow, quiet speed for a few secs then shuts off instead of being constantly on at above half speed.

Sounds good, thanks for reporting back with the results

Shoot a PM at Malibal, I'm sure they could definitely help you out
I believe they use mainly Clevo models, so the Sager disclaimer may not apply to you. Don't take my word for it, definitely check with Malibal. -
This worked, the EC/KBC profile in my post above fixed the hyper active fan. Now to enjoy the peace n quiet tonight!
Thank you for the help. -
which is the latest bios and EC for PH150HM???thx.
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
The latest are listed in that thread:
Bios: 1.01.14
EC: 1.00.12
They were updated as of September I believe. -
its safe to update with these bios and EC?now i have BIOS V 1.01.06 and EC/KBC V 1.00.11.i ll see any difference if i update?my laptop is clevo not sager.thx.

Yes, just be sure you follow the instructions in that thread exactly. It's possible to brick the machine if you do it incorrectly. Also, you may have to reinstall Windows after flashing if your Bios is really out of date. (I've seen bluescreens on boot for some). -
blue screens??why?first i update EC then bios?
edit:also if i flash latest bios and EC can i revert back to the old ones? -
not sure if it's related but I flashed to .06 and worked fine for 2 days. Now my laptop is dead, I think...
Hit the power button and you can see the hard drive light pop on for a few seconds, the screen won't even come on and then the power button turns off.

Unplug the power adapter, pull out the battery, and press the power button. Then put it back together and see if that helped. That should do a soft reset. It doesn't sound like your issue is related to your bios upgrade though, considering the time in between where it was working correctly.
If that doesn't work, please open a support ticket on our site as you purchased it from us
-
Soft reset failed, when I get home again I'll try removing the bios battery for a last resort.
-
Seems like you can't even remove the bios battery, it's heat shrunk.

The battery itself is wrapped in heatshrink to keep the leads in contact on it (it's been pretty common like that in most recent Clevo models). The leads should go to a port on the motherboard where it's plugged in. You should be able to unplug it there.
