Tried searching the forum and google for this but just found reviews of cooling pads in general.
I had one on my old Gateway FX series (which was a decent gaming laptop for it's time) and it made a noticeable difference in gpu/cpu temps.
I imagine the cooling on the p170hm is much better than that gateway but has anyone actually used one with it? Looking at the NZXT CRYO LX.

useful? of course. Needed? no

I was expecting my P170HM to be loud and hot like my 6-year-old D900K/NP9750 was, and that thing pretty much needed a cooler. But I've been very impressed with the noise level and temperatures of this new one, and I use it without a cooler mostly...
The only time I've needed a cooler with the P170HM is when I overclocked the GPU so I could get better performance in a game, and it auto-throttled due to temperature. Once I turned the cooler on it didn't throttle anymore. But general performance without overclocking doesn't require any extra cooling if it's on a hard surface that doesn't block the vents. -
I'm planning on getting a cheap passive lapdesk. If you ever move the notebook to your bed or lap, etc you will want to be careful not to restrict airflow to the bottom vents.
Something you learn when your wife fries your motherboard by surfing the net on the bed. -

I'd actually argue that a cooler is needed but only for those who game a lot.
Excessive exposure to heat shortens the lifespan of the electrical components in your laptop. By using a cooler when those temps get high during gaming, you are helping prolong the life of your laptop.
I couldn't find a lapdesk with sufficient cooling for my needs so I'm building one myself. The NXZT's are nice and all but made for desks and tabletops, not laps.
Cooling pad for p170hm useful/needed?
