Been looking around at different laptops to get my son for Christmas. He wants a gaming laptop to run skyrim and Rift at good quality without hiccups. So here is the setup I got so far:

    NP8170

17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen (1920x1080)

    2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2760QM, 2.4-3.5GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)

IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU

    nVidia GeForce GTX 560M 1,536MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11

    8GB - DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (4 SODIMMS)

    500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

Combo Dual Layer SuperMulti DVDRW/CDRW Drive w/ Software

    Intel® Advanced-N 6230 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module + Bluetooth

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Installed (64&32-Bit CD Included)

and too upgrade to a SSD later and possibly ram also.. Is this going to be a good setup? What would the 580m offer that the 560m does not? and can we upgrade to the 580m later when the price drops?

I'd reccommend getting the AMD Radeon 6990M

Yeah, that's only on one game though. If you wait for a bit, AMD is not stupid, they realize that there are a lot of 6990M owners out there playing skyrim, they'll release their drivers with the fixes soon enough :)

I would like to go ahead with a higher end card. I could drop the Processor down to the 2670 to negate the 6990M price.. Would this still be acceptable? Is .2GHz really going to make a big difference?

no that 0.2ghz aint going to make or break a game, however the 6990m will have much more staying power than that 560m

Agreed! Yes always use your budget first for a video card choice rather than a CPU upgrade. :)

You can get the same configuration in the 15" model which will give him a bit more mobility, assuming he games at home with a monitor half the time and the other half outside.

Otherwise the 17" would be better in the long run for his eyes, or the 18" even. In fact, if I were a gamer without a monitor, I'd get the 18". That's a beast to bring to lan parties.

You can configure the 18" (Veda P180HM) at Laptops, Gaming Laptops & Fastest, Custom Laptops - MALIBAL for about $1500 with comparable specifications AND two AMD 6970 graphics cards, which would rip apart any game for years to come (providing driver support doesn't slip).

Otherwise, for $1400, you can get just one 6970 and load up on other specifications.

The GTX 580m is a monster card, and it would absolutely run those two specified games "without hiccups." Guaranteed.

Same goes for the Radeon 6990m, once the driver kinks have been worked out.

The GTX 580m will remain a high price, even when it is replaced by a higher-end model. Nvidia is just greedy like that. Although it's much like Intel and their 'Expensive Edition' CPUs; they never really stray from the high price tag. Ever.
