Well, I finally got around to dropping my 10 day old i7 980X cpu into the 9820. :D

I've got to say that the results are staring to confirm for me that the 6 core cpu may only start to shine with an extreme overclock. I initially found this when benching the cpu on my desktop rig...that clock for clock, the quad core i7's push the gpu's better than the new hexa-core 980X. :(

On my desktop, I had a very hard time matching my i7 920 & 960 Vantage "gpu" scores with the 980X....I came close but couldn't push past. And that was with 10 days of tinkering with the cpu OC settings. But I'm pretty happy with my 4.7Ghz desktop scores, as the cpu score increase more than made up for the eventual slight decrease in the gpu score

On the 9820, I found the situation to be worse on the gpu score when compared to the i7 960.

    Here is Vantage physx-off 980X:

For comparison sake, here is the same with the i7 960 cpu:

    Here is a physx-on run with 980X:

    And a Physx-on run with the i7 960 cpu:

I have to say that, other than the CPU scores, the 980X is pretty disappointing in the clevo. :( Possibly a new BIOS could help? It might, and as you can see the 980X is recognized as "X000". That's what the POST screen shows too...X 000. Hopefully I can get my hands on a new BIOS soon and try it again.

And don't even ask about 3dm06....atrocious, just atrocious...

Glad to see this cpu working, Mutant_Tractor was trying with an ES and could not get it to work at all.

The situation might change with a BIOS and Service Pack update.

    980x runs way too hot also. 59C idle...yikes. The 960 runs 39-42c idle @ room temp of 16C (61F)

Maybe that's the reason y Clevo is skipping it officially.

that does not seem right.....the 980x should be about the same temps as the 975

Not if the BIOS is not fully compatible with it.

OP the images that you uploaded are so large they are getting out of the screen. In the forum rules they suggest to rescale the large images or to use thumbnails.

Or maybe the temperature reading of this CPU is not correct, that's all.
It should run even slightly cooler than 975. The idle CC is 18W.

That is a good point, improper bios support could lead to the misreading of the temp sensor

Q56, do you have an IR temp gun or contact probe you can use to compare the temps between the 980x and 975? (if you have both of course)

Maybe the software which reads the temp is not calibrated.

I own a D900F with Gulftown CPU, too.
It seems that some software does not give the correct temps.
One example is CoreTemp which often does not show lower temperatures after you closed an appliciation with 100% CPU load.
Now I installed SpeedFan 4.40. The temps here make more sense.
After one hour of 100% CPU load of all 6 cores I get core temperatures between 46 and 52 degrees which is great.
Hopefully the temperatures are correct :D
If so, I will think about overclocking the CPU for sure

that is not possible. It is supposed to run about 80-85C when all cores are 100% running even with 12 threads.

at what speeds/voltage? and based off what?

you cannot post stuff like that without proof

Sorry, no probs. But I can say that temps don't read what they theoretically should. Software read temps are all over the place for me. 7C, 59C. Very weird.

I have the 980x in my desktop atm. When I get some time, I'm going to update the D900f bios to 1.06 and see if that helps....probably won't, but we'll see.

It is just not possible to run 130W 980X CPU at 50C while all cores are 100% stressed. 130W CPUs does not matter if its 920 or 975 are IDLING at 50C+ and while 100% stressed cpu temp raises up to 85C. This is just imposible.

I can understand you thinking that, but at idle cooling this is rather easy since they idle down around 25W usually

As long as the voltage is stock, at full load these do not have a huge temp delta in my experience (using a 920 and 930 on my desktop)

When the 45 nm processors came out many software reported wrong temperatures. It is possible that it happens the same now.

Excuse my ignorance but is this the new replacement for the extreme i7's ?? e.g the new top dog ?

It's just an addition to them, it does not replace them. The top end 4-core i-7s will remain on the market.

Hmmm, I think the 980x will beat any prior i7 really....in both clocks and performance - making it new king

I agree, as I'm easily besting all my previous 920 D0 & 960 bench scores on my desktop rig with the 980x. But that is with some good overclocking on a evga classified mobo, which has an great BIOS to OC with.

This clevo has a nothing of a BIOS as you know. Not working so good now in the D900f.

Did the new bios make the 980x work worse?

Aight, resellers are now advertising the 9280 with this cpu so it must now be officially supported :)

Cool. I thought there were some problems with the 6 cores cpus. One user from the forum put it in his D900F and it was not booting. Too bad the hexacores are so expensive at this moment.

in all fairness, he was using an ES

I agree on the price, although considering that it is almost entirely overkill unless you only benchmark, look at it as a plus as it will drop the 975's price :)

...or unless you'r running scientific apps like FEA or CFD that keep the cpu busy up to several days. i could perfectly make use of a hexacore :)

That is why I said almost, the majority of people who would benefit in business from the hexacore will be buying a xeon anyways and not a core i7 extreme because they are doing more mission specific tasks

I`ll be getting one of those 980X Gulftown processors very soon when building my new desktop computer, and the best thing about it is, when i`m ready to upgrade my desktop computer again, my 980X won`t go to waste as I can stick it in my lappay.
