So I have a D900F sitting here collecting dust. I can't sell it as nobody wants it. I was going to gift it to someone and I was wondering about my GPU upgrade options. It currently has the GTX 280M. I heard eurocom has the 5870 with a modded heatsink for the D900F. There is GTX 480M for around $900 from Sager. How do I find out if my D900F can support the GTX 480M? What kind of performance increase can you expect from both these cards over the GTX 280M? worth it? Is it possible to put GTX 470M in this laptop? Any info regarding this would be really great.

The 480/470m GPUs might work, you would most likely need a modded heatsink for those.

Wonder if the bios will support the new GPUs.

Might be better to try selling the D900F (not sure why you say nobody wants it, try putting it in the NBR marketplace), then add the $900, buy a new notebook with a 470m (Clevo W870CU?).

I just want to sell it locally and don't want to ship it. I know someone who needs a laptop and this would be a good gift. So back to the topic, I thought when you buy GPU from Sager and other places, they included the heatsink? I have the latest bios. Weren't they selling D900F with GTX 480M before X7200 came out?

So can anyone shed some light on the performance increase I can get from these cards.

Yes you're right, the D900F was sold with a 480m, and if you buy the GPU from the right place you will get the heatsink with it.

The performance increase will be pretty decent. And it will give you dx11.

GPU upgrade - not worth it, is the short answer. Costs a lot of money for a relatively minor performance increase + DirectX 11.

CPU upgrade should be relatively easier to do, compared to GPU, but again - the difference in performance between a i7 920 and a 980X is not huge, and so only worth it if you really need it.

    Bios 1.00.09 / 04

480M - yes, official support (new CPU cooler version required)

    470M - until now, i don“t know, i think no (460M)

460M - no, in 3D no clock change to full power ( problem at D900F owner lounge)

5870 - yes, W8(7/6)0 card with mod X8100 cooler (pictures at my review)

mysn ask clevo to support 460M in the D900F bios: "The support clarified this with the technician if it is possible."
