I apologize in advance if this question has been answered before.

I have been out of the game for a while. I am looking to replace my desktop for work with a laptop. I will keep the machine for up to 4 years. It will be used for mathematical computations using MAPLE and for video/audio editing. My budget is up to $4000 US.

I am looking at either a D900F or a W870CU. I am looking for some advise concerning the D900F and any downside associated with buying a machine that has a desktop processor. (Power consumption is not a huge issue since I will use the machine on AC/DC 95% of the time. I also do not intend to OC the processor.

    Thank you in advance.

If weight and looks are not a problem, then the D900F should fit you perfectly. However if you think you would like/need a less heavy package to deal with, as well as a better screen and updated chassis, then go for the W870CU.

BTW, just so you know, the D900F actually has better battery life. I wonder how much sense does that make...

    D900F all the way.
i7 975 + triple channel RAM would rock, for what you are going to do.

    You can't be serious...

Does the desktop i7 absolutely throttle itself or something?

    The D900F uses a 6600mAh battery. The W8x0CU uses a 3800mAh battery.

While that may seem a rather benign statement on the surface, make sure you read Gophn's D900F review and see exactly how big the D900F is. At first I thought "Oh, I don't care how big or boxy it is, I'm not moving it at all, and I just use AC power.."

Then I actually saw the photos of this beast, and got out my tape measure and determined how big it is in relation to my current laptop. I'm sure many people are OK with its size and boxy looks, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on something that looked so.. outdated.. for lack of a better word.

    Just my $0.02! :)

That's stupid. Why don't they use a 6600mAh battery in the W870CU? Would the size be a problem, or is it the heat?

Agreed, the D900F does look like a brick.

Because the 12 cell 6600mAh battery in the D900F is very, very big.

Thanks for pointing me to the review.

I don't really care at all about the looks. In some ways ugly might be better :) . But even though I should likely not have been, I was surprised by the weight difference. I travel a lot so this will be a factor. I am also a bit torn because it sounds like the screen on the D900F is not as nice.

In the end, it sounds like performance-wise I will be fine either way. So it may just come down to the intangibles.

    Thanks again to all.
