I recently bought another DVD-/+RW DL slim drive for my laptop in addition to the stock drive it came with. The bios sees both optical drives (new drive master, old one slave), however, in windows, it ONLY sees the new drive. Do I have to reinstall the chipset driver or something?

thats strange.
I would recommend to go Device Manager, and Uninstall the "Secondary IDE Channels"
then either Scan for new hardware, or Restart
this will force XP to re-detect all optical drives connected to the Secondary IDE channel -
Seems I needed to mark the drive 'enabled' in the bios>boot order screen. That's odd because the drive is detected in the bios, giving me the impression that it was already enabled/active.
I did try uninstalling the 2nd IDE channel you mentioned before I fiddle around in the bios more, but no go. However enabling the device in the boot order menu (puts an ! next to it) did the trick. -
o cool.
glad it worked for ya.
