Little background: I recently came across a D900K laptop (it was a D900T, previous owner swapped mb's when the original one stopped working.) It has a 7900GTX video card installed. I only had to add a CPU and hard drive. So far no issues, system is working great. The only possible issue I've noticed is the CPU temps. I tested two CPU's on this laptop:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (Toledo)
AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 (Toledo)
With the FX-60, idle CPU temps (HWMonitor and CoreTemp) for both cores are usually around 32°C. Under load it can go as high as 66°C for both cores which I believe exceeds its max temp. So I removed the CPU for now.
With the X2 4800, both cores report different temps. Monitors show an average of 10°C difference between cores at idle (#0 = 39°C and #1 = 29°C). Under load, they are more even with max temps in the 65°C range. I have a desktop with this same CPU and the cores do not show this temp difference at idle.
So do either of these readings look normal for the D900K? I've applied AS twice, using the drop method, with the same results on both CPU's. Can't seem to get the temps down or eliminate the difference at idle for the 4800. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks,
JQ
PS Been lurking here for some time now and learned much from the community! My many thanks for that too!

66c is not much at all. No worries there. The different idle temps are normal too. Nothing to worry about really.
Welcome to the forum -
Those are super good temps. Don't worry till you hit 90C+
-
for an athlon x2, the max "safe" temp is 65*C, so you are correct that the FX-60 is over temp. However, what were you using to cause that temp and will it happen often in normal use? If no, then you're fine.

Oops, it's an AMD cpu... Sorry.

Yeah 65C is quite a bit hot. My Opteron 185 would peak around 135F, which is alot lower than 65C
Are you using FN+F2 to force the fans to full speed?
You can also use CPU Rightmark to undervolt the processor. That can shed off as much as 15 watts from operating current. This can reduce temperature more than 20F from my own experience.
What are you using for thermal readouts?
core temp, hwmonitor and everest do not provide accurate thermal readouts on the D900K.
You need to install "GET THERMAL"
that is the only software which accurately reads the processor temperature on this system.
I have used my infrared heat gun to read thermal load and it matches what Get Thermal posts.

Before I tried anything, I made sure everything was clean and all the fans are working. One thing that I thought was a bit strange was the heatsink screws. I have to really force them down to get to the holes. It all lines up and the CPU does get covered by the copper, just thought it was unusually tough to get the hs all locked down. I wonder if the heatsink is not seating properly. The exhaust does not feel warm at all, even under load it does not really feel hot, maybe a bit warmer. The thermal paste appears to be spread evenly, don't really see any spots that are not covered.
theriko:
During normal use (browsing, reading email, etc) the temp readings don't go above more than a few degrees. I ran/played one game (FarCry for 15 minutes) while I had either CoreTemp or HWMonitor on to record the max temp reading. I also used OCCTPT to run a test and get the cores to those temps while load was at 100%. I stopped it once the cores hit 65°C. That is really the only time the temp goes up.
K-TRON:
Yes, I use the Fn+F2 to force the fans at full speed all the time, don't mind the noise. I downloaded 'Get Thermal' and will take a look at the temps. CPU Rightmark is new to me, so I'll read up on it before trying it out. You wouldn't normally need to use this right?
Thanks everyone for your replies! -
When you set up a profile in CPU Rightmark such as performance on demand, you can save the profile and rightmark will load with windows.
Get Thermal is one of those programs you need to manually open with windows.

So I reseated the heatsink a couple of times to see if it was making good contact. It was not quite right so I finally got that fixed (little twisting did the trick). The laptop was working fine, temps were down to 28°C in idle and never get above 54°C when under load (this is with the FX-60 chip). Been using get thermal to monitor the temps. However something strange started happening a few days ago. Now, soon after booting up (either in BIOS or windows), the three indicator lights (caps, scroll and num lock) start blinking simultaneously. I can hear a beep along with them. They blink exactly 60 times before the laptop shuts down. The exhaust air on both cpu and gpu do not appear to be warm at all, fans go on full when the blinking starts. I've used get thermal and other programs to look at the temps when this happens and they are always below 30°C. I was thinking that I may have messed something up with get thermal, haven't changed anything that I can see. Anyone know what this means?

Do any of you kind people have a BIOS update for a Clevo M550se/M660se based notebook.
I'm trying to upgrade one made by Positivo (V42) in Brazil, originally it had a Celeron chip and Ive put in a C2D 1.66ghz but it only shows as 997mhz due to multiplier lock. -
Sorry mctiny, I don't have any BIOS updates, just trying to get this laptop to stay on for more than a minute!

It's ok I managed to post in the wronge thread.
