    Hi,

I have a strange intermitting problem.

Sometimes when I power on the laptop, I can hear the fans, all power light's are on but the screen stays blank and there are 2 short beeps from the speakers then nothing - it will just sit like that.

Powering off and on has cured it everytime.

    Things I have done -

Ran memcheck - it ran all night with no errors.
Reseated CPU and GPU's and reappling thermal paste.

Not sure what else could be the problem ? I have the latest BIOS.

I also wonder if this now related to my other problem ?

Sounds like a fan error. I assume your fans are working fine though. Try unplugging the BIOS battery for half a minute. Also, you could do a power drain.

Not sure what is ment by a power drain ? I presume the bios batt is under the keyboard ? I should have the service manual somewere.

**ok found out about the power drain and will try that tonight - is there a jumper for the bios ? cant see anything in the service manual?**

    Thanks for the info.

Do you, by a chance, have 8800/9800 video cards? Same for the 7000 series cards.
If yes, there is a high % that it's your card that died. Search for other info about dead video cards on this forum.
If it's under warranty, get an RMA, if not try the solutions offered in the other replies/questions, such as baking or just buying a new card.

    Good luck.

Yes I have dual 8800gtx's but both work just fine. This problem is very intermetting.. may not happen for a week/month. when it does, simply recycling the power allows the laptop boot up.

I have typed this from my laptop after playing Bad Company 2 using Sli.

Or do you mean its an early warning that one card ma be dying ?

    Regards
    B

** Does anyone know if a overheating HDD could cause this & also the major slow downs ? I wondering if my HDD is overheating. I tried HDtune but it reporting 45c but with a max high of66c. Might buy another HDD and see.

AFAIK, no jumpers, just unplug the BIOS power connector near the (BIOS) battery.

Two short beeps during POST almost universally means a memory error. The fact that you ran a memory test without error is not necessarily a clean bill of health. The problem may be only intermittent. The normal process is to remove and re-seat memory chips; if the problem remains, swap the first and second memory banks. If that fixes it, the second bank is bad. Remove and replace. If the problem remains, it is possible but unlikely that both banks are bad. More likely, the mobo is dying. If still under warranty, get tech support involved now. No sense having to through the same procedures again.

Bought the laptop second hand so its not under warrenty. Will replace the ram and cross my fingers. But the problem as I say is intermitting and may not happen again for months.

Good luck, my friend. Sometimes this sort of issue seems to cure itself. Or at least goes dormant for a time.
