D901C/9262 beeping when fans set to max, KBC/BIOS update didn't fix it

As the title says, I get BIOS style beeping whenever the fans are set to max. Note: it only happens when they are set to max, the opposite of what you'd expect if it were a temperature problem. It sounds like it might be a voltage issue (since the fans draw the most power when they're set to hi), but unplugging all of my peripherals does not seem to remedy the situation. The beeping stops a few seconds after setting the fans to auto.

Also, over the past week and a half or so I've started getting beeps while gaming occasionally (speedfan reads my GPU at less than 70C, all four cores at less than 60 when this happens). The beeping will continue for about a minute, until the entire system shuts down. I think this beeping is separate from the above issue, because when the fans are set to high the system doesn't shut down.

In both cases the scroll lock led lights up, and the numlock and caps lock leds flash in unison during the beeping.

I've tried disassembling and cleaning with compressed air/cotton swabs, updating the BIOS (currently using 1.00.22, downloaded from the link below), updating the KBC (currently using 1.00.13N--my D901C has the vista keyboard mind you), booting in DOS from a flash drive, booting with the battery taken out, booting on battery power, disconnecting all of the peripherals, etc. None of these measures has solved either of the two problems.

It should be noted that both of these problems are fairly recent-- definitely didn't happen (or at least present themselves) more than a few weeks ago.

    BIOS/KBC updates obtained from:
    http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/esupport/MarketDLOut.asp?model=D900C/D901C&go=GO&type=BIOS

Current BIOS is 10.00.22, KBC is 10.00.13N, OS is Vista 64x

Would appreciate any help you guys can give =)

Edit: Looks like the two problems are actually one and the same-- it does actually shut itself down after a minute of high fans. Also, note the description of the min of high fans shutdown as fixed in KBC 1.00.12N... neither that version nor 13N is fixing it for me =(

The fans probably draw to much power? Try not running any CPU/GPU intensive applications when you set the fans to high...same problem?

this beeping shows you the problem you have to find in the net if you can what this beep show you

I can go from a complete idle (cores less than 2% usage), hit fn+1, then beeping and a minute later shutdown. I don't think its a power issue anymore--if you read the notes for the BIOS updates on the Clevo page I linked in the OP, it describes the problem as:

    2. When system working temperature reaches fan on point but the system can’t receive normal fan speed information, it will alarm for one minute then shut down.

As above, I'm fairly sure I've identified the problem-- there's an issue somewhere between the fans and the motherboard thats preventing the normal feedback loop from functioning. The conundrum now is that the KBC/BIOS updates that should fix this problem fail to do so. Hence, I submit it to the brain trust, perhaps you guys might have an idea.

did you look if all fans are connected to the motherboard and if the memory and cpu fan are not in wrong slots

When I took the back panel off to check the fans, I decided to boot it up to make sure that they were spinning properly, and lo and behold the beeping didn't happen. When I took the panel and held it on with my hand (not screwed back on), the beeping returns. Apparently the back panel is putting pressure on something inside the case (one of the fan cables? They didn't seem to be in a position that the case would push on them...) that's interfering with the fan speed feedback... Have no idea how to fix it yet unfortunately =(

I would remove and re-seat each fan. make sure they are oriented correctly and being held down fully by their screws. And of course make sure all the fan cables are connected fully, and over both prongs. It sounds like either the back panel is putting pressure on something, and interupting the signal, or, maybe its actually clipping a fan blade and stopping it from moving. Though since this only happens at full speed, that would mean one of the fans may be shifting at higher speeds. Not the fan housing but the prop. Just a thought.

I would remove the back panel, switch to full speed, and lay the back panel in place, putting pressure over one area/fan at a time to figure out where contact is being made that causes this.

Was the notebook upside down when it was on high, and not beeping? if so, that would make me think one of the fan props is lose, and its moving up and down within its housing. If I had mine I'd use it as reference.

Also, with the panel off, and the notebook shutdown, check the fan blades for any play/looseness. see if any of them moves up and down easily within their housing. just be gentle.

Yeah, just got back and reseated each fan... I'm declaring a tentative victory (no beeping as of yet, and the fans have been on high for a good 15 minutes). I'll post an update after a day or so of use, make sure it worked.

That is a very significant find! There have been several NBR members over the course of the past year or so who have reported beeping that they could not fix by updating the BIOS or EC/KB firmware. It is entirely possible that their problems were the same sort as yours. Good work!

Hrmmm, was gaming for a bit with fans on high, then turned them back to auto while i went to go get food... back up to high when I get back and beeping returned. Took the panel back off, tinkered around for a bit (reseated the fans again, tightened everything up, etc.) inexplicably it stops beeping. Kind of strange, crossing my fingers that it doesn't recur.

Have you checked the connectors to make sure that they're seating snugly and not loose? Also, when the system is sitting right-side-up, do the fans hang down from their connectors, or not?

Yeah, unplugged the connectors and then reseated them snugly... Don't see how the fans could pull on the connectors--they're all screwed into the frame pretty tightly. Regardless, its now working, and I have fingers crossed that it will continue to do so. Guess this is just another thing to check if you have inexplicable beeping ;)

Edit: Ack, out of curiosity just turned the fans back to auto (had been on high for several hours with no issues), then flipped it back on to high-- beeping again.

i send you PM with the bios and D901C User + Service Manual that can help to remove and reinstall all parts

It definitely sounds like something in the physical installation is causing a problem with the system. If there are any connectors on the mainboard that hook up to the thermal sensors built into the cpu/chipset, you might check those to see if there are any issues with the connector coming loose or shorting.

Yeah I'll probably take Gangsta's advice and break the entire thing down... Going to have to wait two and a half weeks till the semester ends though--have to have computer access til then and I prefer not to risk bricking the laptop (granted, disassembly/reassembly isn't rocket science, but my overconfidence seems to have a way of coming back and biting me in the rear).

So I have basically been able to recreate the OP's situation, except I am missing my memory fan. I am wondering if someone here who's D901C is in stable, working condition could try disconnecting the ram fan and booting up, then switching the fans to high with fn + 1. If you get the beeping like I do, this would help me narrow down the list of issues I have yet to deal with. Thanks!

Im bumping. I really need help here. If someone can recreate my situation by removing the ram fan, and toggling fans on high with fn + 1, and find out if it beeps.

Make a bootable CD, or USB stick. Copy the files for update. Restart, go to BIOS, set the the booting device CD or USB, save, restart. Boot from CD or USB, install the updates and follow the instructions.

i have the iso file that updates the KBC to eliminate the beeps. i can email it to you if you want. you will need NERO to burn the iso file to a CD (under backup > "burn image to disk") and then reboot from the CD to update the KBC firmware that way.

edit; i emailed you a zip that contains the file.
