I was looking to figure out if I can use the LP171WU5 over the LP171W02 that's currently in my laptop right now. From what I understand, I won't need a new inverter to switch to that, but I'm running into two issues. One is, I can't find the exact dimensions of the LP171W02 to compare with the WU5 to make sure it's going to fit seamlessly.

The second issue is I can't even find the Lp171WU5 for a decent price from places where they have them in stock. Seems like the only places that do want anywhere between $600 and 700 for them.

So I guess it comes down these questions: Has anyone done this switch? And has anyone managed to actually locate a decent price for the unit (besides lcdsuper.com, they're out of stock)?

I would almost keep the W02 if it only didn't have a hot pixel on it. Quite annoying, and the nail in the coffin for the decision to switch.

Yeah, they're (lcdsuper.com) out of stock. I actually mentioned that, too. :) Places I found that were even <$400 had no stock, too. It almost makes me think other places are buying them out and putting them back up for sale for $200-300 more!

I do quite a bit of graphics work and was really hoping for that 8bit display over the 6bit current ones. Though, truth be told, I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make over all, but I'm willing to find out, all the same!

It really shouldn't be this hard to find information ... does the inverter that supports the LP171W02 also support the LP171WU1?

it depends what version lp171wu1 you have. some of them were made to be 300+nits (tl a5 version) and the regular inverter does not power them to full brightness and gets really hot if used on those screens. i have done extensive testing on this model and different variations of the lp171wu1. imo the two best versions are the tl a2 (260nits) and the tl a5 (300+nits). try to stay away from current a4 versions (a4 k5 or a4 k6 or a4 k4) as they are not as bright (190nits) and tend to have some grain to them i have a BRAND NEW lp171wu1 tl a5 tested with eye one at 312 nits. its REALLY BRIGHT.. im selling reasonable if interested.. pm me for more info. trust me i have tested them all i have 7 panels here lol..

I'm in the same position with you..
My 5760 display has acquired some vertical lines, maybe it's just a connector issue..

But the 6bit/8bit issue DOES make a difference.
I have the notebook connected to my trusty 201P CRT as a second proofing display. I have both calibrated with a spider.
The difference in dynamic range is huge.
The notebook clips whites and blacks.

Honestly for graphics work it is not worth spending that amount for a new notebook display.
You are far better off investing in a 24' S-IPS like the HP LP 2475,
which will be still better than the 8bit LP171WU5, and much easier to work with..
