Today, I had the weirdest thing occur. I was suddenly completely disconnected from the internet and windows said an ethernet cable was unplugged, when it wasn't. Tried disabling the ethernet adapter and re-enabling, nothing. Tried rebooting, nothing. Tried replacing the cable with a brand new one that I received two days ago, no go. Tried hooking the cable into all of the different ports on the router, nothing. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet driver, nothing. Right now I'm on wi-fi. I'm stumped. I really hope I don't have to send it in for repairs... Any help is appreciated.

Inspect the socket on the computer itself to see if you can find any indications of damage within the socket.

Just tried that Linux Live CD (Ubuntu 8.04), same thing occurred. Brother suggested manually telling the ethernet card to shutdown and restart, then that did the trick. I was browsing with wi-fi off and using ethernet. Rebooted into windows, and suddenly it now works. I'm not sure if I can credit Linux for this, though it has saved the day for me on many occasions in the past. Quite a relief, but I think if it happens again I may need to send it in for repairs...
