i just did my first clean install since i hadnt done it in a few months. i decided to try the last release of win 7 and after fighting a bit with the drivers i was able to make it work pretty good.

I tried a few games like crysis warhead and i was nicely suprised...no more micro stuttering like under VISTA 64 and a nice boost with the fps !!

Seems like win 7 even with vista 64 video drivers like my 9800m GT SLI better or so...I work a bit with photoshop and i noticed a boost with its usage too.

So for now win 7 beta is my new main OS ! Try it if you re not afraid to fight for an hour getting all your drivers ! i was even able to find beta drivers for my creative live external sound card :p

Thx Microsoft for a new bad system ! bye vista lol

microstuttering? on any system except netbooks vista should be about on par with win7. and win7 is just beta and will not run for ever.

    still, have fun with it.

The microstuttering was most likely due to "issues" with the video drivers, so if Win7 beta likes those drivers better, that might be what resolved the microstuttering.

How much ram does your system have? Just wondering because supposedly Vista really chugs at under 4GB in games, when it starts prefetching a lot of data back and forth, which might explain the chugging and the fact that win7 isn't doing it as much.

Suppose it does help having quad core... :)

Actually, having one of the slower quad cores can sometimes exacerbate the stuttering problem, mainly because the first quads were really two dual core dies sort of glued together into a pseudo quad core, and communication between a core on one die and a core on another die has to go across the FSB, thereby tying up the main communication line for every other component.

Yea your right, slow mobie quads (Like q9000) aren't great, but the OP has Q9550, I can hardly call that slow. At 2.83Ghz, even if apps don't scale properly, its still fast . Windows 7 has also improved multicore scalability as well...

The higher clock in the current gen of quad cores has mostly eliminated the stutter issue (from what I've seen around the net); however, the ultimate source of the problem is still there because even latest non-i7 quads still utilize the glue-two-dies-together approach to making quad cores, and consequently cores on different dies must use the FSB to communicate with each other.

That problem is obviated with the new i7s, in part because the new architecture no longer uses the FSB at all. The development of the i7 architecture is undoubtedly why Intel never got around to making a true pre-i7 quad core and instead stuck with gluing dual core dies together.
