Is there any way to stop the laptop making a beeping noise when it connects to the network? I have gone into the settings and turned off display notifications (although it still shows them) and can find no way to stop the irritating beep.

did you look at the settings of the Network Adapter itself?

Device Manager > Network Devices > right-click your Wireless network card
    > choose Properties.

I hadn't but can't see anything there. Realised I had turned off Alert notifications, but not Information ones. Not sure if turning off both has sorted it yet...

Weird thing is that checking in Device Manager I saw I had disabled my firewire port (along with bluetooth and a couple of other things.) Obviously not strange in itself but I installed the drivers for my firewire keyboard/audio interface and it all worked fine. How was I getting sound out of my firewire device if the firewire port was disabled? :-?
