Specifically, I'm looking at a Clevo P650RE/ @XMG P506 offered with 2 module types:
* 2400MHz Hyper X Impact modules (up to 4*8GB)
* 2133Mhz Samsung (up to 4x16GB)
Would like to quantify the performance of those memory modules. Your thoughts or relevant benchmarks would be much appreciated. BTW Any info regarding availability of 2667MHz modules?
Many thanks

@Mr. Fox and I have the Kingston DDR4 2400Mhz ram and both of us got it to 2666Mhz overclocked. He also got it to 2800Mhz.
@Matrix Leader has the Samsung DDR4 16GB ram and has gotten it to 2400Mhz and 2666Mhz.
Your results may vary as @GTVEVO has the Kingston 2400Mhz memory but couldn't get it to work at 2666Mhz yet.
Honestly it doesn't matter too much which one you get. If you want more capacity, get the 16GB modules from Samsung. The Kingston ram is nice for overclocking. I plan to play with 2800Mhz soon.
Both sticks are good and you can't go wrong. If you want 32GB from two sticks, get the Samsung ram.TomJGX, Spartan@HIDevolution, i_pk_pjers_i and 1 other person like this. -
Thanks a lot.
Do you have any benchmark results at various DRAM speeds (everything else equal) that you could share?
BTW If I understand correctly I should really fill 4 slots with modules of the same type, particularly if any overclocking is to be attempted? -
It's always best to use the exact same ram sticks regardless of stock vs overclocking.
I'll have to borrow @Mr. Fox 's benchmarks since I haven't done any yet on memory.

here is my benchmark @ 2666 MHz using my Samsung 64GB RAM

Many thanks guys.
Got encouraged and played around with my 2x8GB Micron 2133 memory. Went up to 2400MHz, results in the mem-intensive benchmark (Cinebench 15 GL) up by a respectable 10%. AIDA results just a bit worse than the 2400 result above (in standard fan mode though). Overall, a very worthwhile overclock:
What voltages did you guys use?ssj92 likes this. -
Stock voltage 1.2v

Depends on the task, but with gaming not much difference at all:

Thanks. OTOH Cinebench number went up 10% for me... I guess GTA is very well optimized

One more Q: how do I overclock a Clevo P650RE/XMG 506 (6820HK and memory)? Doesnt appear to have any overclocking support in BIOS. Intel XTU?

Generally, I wouldn't suggest overclocking your RAM. It's not likely to give a noticeable performance increase in anything, and it's just likely to potentially cause issues.
-
Noted. However, should a Clevo P650RE/XmG P506 desire to overclock their RAM, given their particular purposes, how would they go about it? It's a simple BIOS setting in the AW15.

Intel XTU?

Thanks. Any probs with the XTU route? XMG advised me that flashing Prema invalidates the warranty.

You can ask them their stance on overclocking voiding the warranty but xtu let's you play around a fair bit.
-
Installed XTU on my AW15. No memory overclocking, presumably same as on the P650RE. I would need to flash Prema and kill the warranty, wouldn't I...
-
well, memory overclocking is more for sport and fun rather than for any actual performance boost in real life applications, so dont get too hung up on that

I wouldn't say you "need" to invalidate your warranty, no. It's up to your discretion, but the memory OC isn't really worth it (depending on how you look at it). To do so, the Prema mod is your only route as far as I'm aware.etern4l likes this. -
Thanks for the straight answer
The mild 2133->2400 overclock on my AW15 yielded 1-10% improvement in benchmarks (10% in cinebench gl), so it seems worth keeping on - given that no overvolting is involved, and the RAM brand Micron is apparently known to overclock well. -

Benchmarks are one thing, real world applications are another.

Well, benchmarks are a proxy for app performance. OpenGL +10%, Javascript 5% extra perf with a 12% mem clock increase, to name those I checked so far. I am sorry most Clevos don't support this out of the box.
-
noticed something interesting: when installing any xtu version newer than 6.0.2.4 the ram overclocking options disappear on me. so i decided to stick to 6.0.2.4, maybe that would be worth checking out for owners of skylake machines as well...? certainly worth a shot.

No memory tuning in XTU 6.0.2.4 for me.
-
too bad, i was afraid of that! im guessing that 6.0.2.4 was the last version published before skylake release...
