So I was taking apart my P870KM and removed the vapor chamber (Hard to take off still is stuck to the CPU heatsink its so caked...) and the thermals were so caked to the Gpu is ripped off 2 Memory Modules and the Connections leading from the die to them. There looks to be GLUE possibly on the pads? Or so used up they are turning white from green.. The White Spots are a lot more sticky than the Green Parts off the Pads. If it is Glue the question is who would do something like that!? The previous user or the reseller? The pads are so stuck to the heatsink I have to scrape them off... Bought the system used a week ago obviously not well taken care off... This is an XoticPC BTW.. For anyone curious... Never seen anything like this so thought I would Share it... Pretty Pathetic... So I guess I'm looking for a 2nd 1080 then... [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Never seen that, who would glue pads and even if it was glue from both side of thermal pads, i dont understand why your pad didnt broke in two parts while you removed it. Then i dont know if it is the quality of your pictures, but your slave gpu has sign of beeing "cooked"

I was gonna say you could probably get those chips soldered back on with a hot air station but then I looked closer and saw the tears in the pcb as the layers were pulled apart

Reminder why not to use adhesive

Memory chip pads should be 0.5mm, what thickness are they?

Also no, while it should perhaps adhere slightly (the pad can stick so they stay with the heatsink or the card) bit maybe with 1/10th that adhesion?

Those are not factory pads for sure.

They were thin like document paper or printer paper. Not 0.5mm

Seems like it's crazy glue it's a clear adhesive under the pad but on top exposed to air where it would be touching the heatsink is white which is quite odd not to mention the are poorly cut

I assume the same glue is used between the vapor chamber and cpu heatsink which is why I can't seem to get it off not even a little...

That could be it to... Crazy that it's so strong it ripped off 2 Vram Chips... And you can't even remove them from the heatsink by hand they need to be scrapped off

    Melted plastic would do that.

Doesn't explain why The CPU heatsink is stuck to the vapor chamber tho... I did message who I bought it from and he said he never opened it so maybe he bought it from someone also or stock from manufacturer? Cause when I bought it only had 32GB of ram in it the other 2 sticks he didn't feel comfortable putting in but he did have them. So kind of believable story.

A thermal pad sits between the part that makes contact between the two heatsinks.

Quite frankly I suspect the original owner is lying.

Had 0 luck removing the vapor chamber from the CPU heatsink so had to end up snapping it off... It was completely stuck not even budging lifting with a flathead screwdriver [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

That white pad stuff is a double sided adhesive thermal tape isn't it?

Man I feel so sorry for you but you should have asked for some tips on how to get that **** apart before... literally... tearing into it

A heat gun may have softened the adhesive or you could have tried to soak isopropyl/metho/acetone in there to weaken the glue

You should inspect the CPU socket closely as all that force being applied to the 4 screws might have ruined or warped the mainboard there too. If you get the bios chip soldered properly that may also produce the same symptom of short detected 1 second off/no post.

I dont think anyone expects thermal tape taking a heatsink off and it would be hard to tell unless you have taken that heatsink off many times and know by feel what it's like coming off.

Ive never seen anything ever like this before, who the heck did this ?
Superglue and epoxy or glue gun rubber/glue is not conducive to keeping things cool.

This is insane, to see the memory come off like that. I'm just speachless...
