Hi all,
When I put a topic here like 20 days ago asking that is it worth getting the new 7970m with all the enduro problems going on , I had an overwhelming response to the affirmative. Now looks like there are people who are abandoning ship and shelling out the extra cash for the 680m. I have paid dear money for this card and want it to function at a ~100% not 60% as is with Enduro. What do the elders of this forum think? Can the issues be resolved?
And most importantly, do I return the laptop? All this has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I don't want my new laptop to be that way

The answers you'll be getting will only be saying "Hopefully there will be a fix in the future", Mythlogic is working on the test driver for this but Clevo and AMD don't even acknowledge the existence of this GPU utilization issue on the P150EM/P170EM.
Some people said that they aren't facing this issue, but most of them have stated that they are experiencing low GPU usage when playing certain games on ultra mode.
If you are getting the HD7970M and found out you are experiencing the exact same issues that others have reported, you will need to be patient and deal with it until Enduro issues are fixed. If you don't want to wait for the fix to arrive, I'd say return it and get a Clevo with GTX680M in it. Alienware users can avoid this issue now by turning Enduro off, but Clevo users can't as the P150EM/P170EM come with a muxless system. -
I guess the question here is - IS The laptop worth keeping?

I was going to get the 7970M because of the such little performance difference for such a huge cost I even placed my order but after reading several threads i was scared away from the 7970M and payed the extra $300
-
Good for you man. I am thinking of RETURNING mine and I haven't RECEIVED it yet.
-
why return it just tell them to upgrade your gpu for the extra cash...
-
It's been shipped. Will receive it tomorrow.

i read on a thread that made me decide to change to the 680M "Don't buy something hoping it will be fixed, buy something that already works."
-
I see. If it's international shipping that's going to cost a lot if you are returning... Unless they cover the shipping cost.
-
No Dude, I live in Mass. Took like 15 days for the order to be processed and now THIS. ing breaks my heart man.
-
I'd wait til the next driver release then decide.
-
What if the return window expires before that?
-
Where did you buy your np9150? Do they have a restocking fee?
-
Returning your 7970 just because there are minor enduro/driver issues (40% loss is no where near accurate, it's more like 3-5% in effected games) is a good way to waste money imo. The 680m is a great card with amazing overclock potential, but to pay for return shipping on top of the $300 it's going to cost for it doesn't sound very appealing to me.
Also, for some perspective I'm running the 7970 in the 150em and have had very little problems with it, and it also runs fairly cool.............I think the main reason you are seeing so many 7970 issue threads is just due to the vast number of people who purchased the card compared to the 680, people rarely post about great experiences.
Bottom line is if you have unlimited cash flow/aren't worried about money then the 680m is a no brainer, on the other hand if you're part the 99% then the 7970 is likely going to be the better choice. -
It's only in some games. Not in ALL games, people are overreacting and creating myth stories of how the Enduro problem is way worse than it is.
Stop the non-sense pleases

Hey , i also had ordered laptop from mysn.de with 7970m will get it this week or next week , but i wont change it to gtx680 its to much cost for almost the same perfomance( at my situacion its 300 euros more) and i do believe sager will release the driver to get back working 100% that card. Also i asked for resseler from mysn.de and he said that most of the driver issue will be fixed with the next driver update.
-
The ONLY reason I would return it is if I was planning to watch fuzzy doughnuts and MSI logos in 3DMark benchmarks. Cause I've yet to see 680M users posting in game performances destroying the 7970M.
-
^^ And you most likely won't. What you see is usually what you get in terms of game performance outside of small gaming OC's that might net you a few FPS, but gains will be nearly equal between both anyway.
The 680m however is a real treat for benchmarkers and OC enthusiasts with the new vBIOS floating around out there.........but it's nothing you're going to want to game on (if you're smart anyway.......) -
Well after lots of consideration, I changed my order. It wont delay it, change it early enough, it was 245 dollar difference. I think it will be well worth it If I can load my favorite games in DX11 not worrying which driver to load. I think the 3 things that changed my mind where, I remember the hassle on getting the 5970 on a desktop to work correctly on games. I remembered for some games I will use 1 driver and other games I would use another driver. Second I scan through the forums looking for problems with the 680 and did find any. Finally I tend to use Linux, and Nvidia over has better drivers in the Linux side of things always. So I decided to change my setup.

This statement is wrong, in many games performance hit is pretty severe where fps drops from semi stable 45-55 to 20ish. In other games utilization is near constant 75-80%, which can be perfectly playable, but still slower than it should be.
It doesn't affect just a few people either - resellers have confirmed that all EM series 7970ms are affected.

Jaug, Please list a few games where this issue does completely not exist... so far I've not come across one

And 680M suffer drops in FPS. EVERY GPU DOES... >.>
-
Could you provide a source?
-
however the 680m (and every other GPU) have small drops where they drop to 80% utilization for a few seconds. the 7970m has trouble going above 80% in 9/10 games. at this point in time if you are seriously arguing the 7970m is working as advertised than you either extremely ignorant or incapable of reading the utilization charts in afterburner. I play the secret world with a buddy of mine who has an asus with a gtx460m 128bit best buy version and he is within 10% OF MY 7970M! im sorry that unacceptable and complete BS. my 680m is on the way and im sending my 7970m back in the box for a refund (thanks malibal) the 7970m has amazing potential, but after nearly 3 months of waiting for fixes and seeing nothing but extremely marginal improvements from 12.7 im done with AMD. at this point i want something that works
-
I do not experience this with any game. I have yet to see any game 680M blows away the 7970M and yet to see any game where my GPU usage stays low all the time.

If your 7970M works great then fantastic for you, I'm happy for you i hope you enjoy your amazing laptop and amazing GPU. Unfortunately a lot of other people's 7970M don't work as promise and they don't want to wait for a fix to come around that may not even come anytime soon. I for one am glad that i was able to change my order to the 680M. -
Drops of a few % vs drops of up to 50% on 7970m.

Wait a second, can you link a source for this? I find it hard to believe neither acknowledges the issues, but if it's true, that's a huge disappointment.

its kinda obvious actually, there hasn't been any efforts by clevo or amd to fix this. -
New AMD 7970 Clevo Drivers! http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/679568-7970m-8-982rc1-feedback-appreciated.html

I have yet to experience this constant low percentage. I'm no pro when it comes to using afterburner, but I have been monitoring the graphs, alt-tabbing out of games to see what the usage is. In more demanding games, it's usually around 95%. If I'm playing a less demanding game like diablo 3, utilization is typically in the low to mid 80s, probably because I have vsync on and the card has no trouble keeping 60fps with ~80-85% utilization. If in D3 I have a crazy battle that is more taxing on the card, utilization jumps up in the mid 90s. Are you saying GPU utlization should always be towards the top? Doesn't make sense to me unless it's necessary, like in a more demanding game like BF3. I'm hopefully getting that soon, seems to be a game a lot are having trouble with and I'd like to see how my card performs with it.

If you check this thread and look at Clevo's response, you'll find out Clevo didn't even know this issue exists. Mythlogic has recently started working on test driver from 12.3 > 12.6 and report what they found back to AMD, they have mentioned so far they are getting positive response from AMD, but being said they have been getting positive resonse from AMD, the acknowledgement on this issue at AMD has only just started recently. Mythlogic also mentioned they have contacted Clevo, but didn't mention if Clevo has accepted the existence of this GPU utilization issue when using Enduro.
-
Well, Sager IS looking into this and released a test driver today. Check out my post on the previous page for links to download it.

Especially if you are considering a clevo. -
I'd like to get ahold of a 7970m to test. If only I could get a sponsor.
Didnt even get the laptop yet and thinking of returning it.
