What is the difference between a SATA I HD and a SATA II HD? My assumption is SATA II is faster, but is it just faster writing or is faster reading as well?

    Does one generate more heat?

Almost have all my answers. Just waiting on a check to clear before I order my new gaming rig. I've decided on a 9262 and most of the options I want. I was originally looking at a Quad 9650, but am leaning towards the E8600. I am also trying to decide on a Dual Boot or Vista only.

SATA I tranfers up to 150MB/s
SATA II transfers up to 300MB/s

In a notebook, that does not really matter since notebook HDDs do not even have that high of a transfer rate.

SATA-II is just the new standard, it does not mean it has increased any performance or anything.

Only desktop HDDs that have 10,000+ rpm will even get up past 150MB/s transfers.

    SSDs can surpass 150 MB/s.
You should go with a quad core and XP only.

SSD's can but are not "bang for the buck" but sure are fast.... as long as they are stable.

    NP9262 is SATA-300 compliant.
(G/P945 and above are SATA-300 compliant)

You'll want the quad 9650 over the 8600. You'll see far better performance. IMO, Vista only. XP just doesn't really have any advantages anymore, now that Vista is updated and working correctly.

    Hi.

How can you tell if you have SATA 1 or 2 controller ?

I have an Intel PM45 chipset.

    Thanks

    John.

Santa Rosa (Intel PM965) and newer platforms (like PM45) have SATA-II support.

There's really no difference between both except some fancy features ( http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid5_gci992442,00.html# ) but there's no difference for the speed. Also, you shouldn't worry if your computer is SATA I or II since SATA I is compatible with SATA I interface (although you might need to set some jumpers) and SATA II drives are cheaper (at least, on the desktops)

Try to go in device manager and look up in google for your hard drive model.
