On the surface it just appears as if the S1 starts at a higher minimum config. Is there an actual physical difference?

    Yes, 8170-S1 / P170HM-S1, 8150-S1 / P150HM-S1 etc. are simply discounted configurations of the 8170 / P170HM, 8150 / P150HM etc.

The S1 models are identical to the non S1 models except they have a higher base configuration. If you take a non S1 and put the same specs as the S1 they will be exactly the same except the S1 will cost you less. If you're thinking about getting the higher specs the S1 have in them they're the way to go.
