    Hello,

According to My Computer, my new laptop has used 105 GB of the space on the hard drive. However, when I open the hard drive, select all (including hiddens), I see that everything on the hard drive adds up to only 49 GB. So where is the extra 56 GB??

Here is an image of what I mean.

+ The hibernation file eat up disk space similar your ram size. If you don't need hibernate then disable for more disk space. A ssd is more than fast enough to boot without the need of hibernate. And a shutdown and clean boot is preferred.

As with others, page file and hibernation file will be huge. You have to uncheck the box "hide protected operating system files" in your folder options. The hibernation file is usually the same size as your RAM.

Another thing I can think of is Windows update cache. Given that you're running Windows7 the amount of cached patches (to enable rollbacks) will be huge. Usually it's located in the WinSxS directory. Even on my Win10 install it's 6.2GB. You have to be careful though you can't just delete it (as it may break further updates).

All good suggestions above. Some more thoughts about those suggestions and some addtl suggestions follow:

Show hidden files within windows explorer to see if hibernation and pagefile files are using space. If you want to make changes, do not delete those files directly, but search for how to adjust your system so it can make the changes.

Also check your system restore settings. Delete any restoration points that are somewhat old and you do not need to roll back to. Also search for how to configure this setting to better fit your needs.

In regards to WinSxS stuff, as stooj mentioned, do not delete the file directly. Instead run Disk cleanup. This can sometimes clean up files that are no longer needed to run side by side.

    Empty your recycle bin.

If all else fails, install something like WinDirStat which will help identify what is taking up space on your drives - https://windirstat.info
