I am hoping to get help with figuring out what is wrong with the disk drive in my NP9170. It is the stock drive.

    The problem:

If I insert a disk, the drive spins for a second or two. It then stops, and nothing further happens. The light also turns on while it spins. If I go into My Computer, the existence of the disk drive is not registered.

What I have tried so far with no positive or negative results:

    1. Using different disks, all known to work.

    2. Taking the disk drive out of the laptop, and putting it back in after inspecting it and not seeing any obvious issues.

    3. Going into device manager to find the disk drive. It is listed as operating properly. I also attempted to update the drivers, it did not help.

    4. Cleaning off the lens

    Thanks :)

So other drives work in the same slot ok? How about putting the suspect drive into a usb enclosure? If that does not work then yes it's dead.
