So I'm configuring a new Clevo laptop and I'm wondering whether to have an internal optical drive. Does having an internal optical drive affect the inside temperature of the notebook itself? Since there's no drive in the laptop itself and nothing is running in its spot I'd assume it would be a bit cooler. I don't really use the optical drive on my desktop at all except when I buy a game and need to install it or need to burn a disc for my car which is not often.

I'm ditching OD for another HD. I install everything from external HDs or interwebs anyway.

+1 to moving the internal odd to external, then adding a HD :D

Getting rid of the ODD would result in lighter laptop & longer use while on battery... :)

Lighter, yes. Longer battery life, though? Completely unfounded. Especially if you put a mechanical HDD in it's place; you would LOSE battery life in comparison.

Would ditching an ODD in place of another HDD really make it any lighter?

Guys, concentrate! user jima was answering on the thread! the hard drive instead of optical bay problem was started by me, not by that one who created a thread. So yes. Getting rid of DVD ROM will make it lighter and maybe little-little increase battery life.

    @ James D - Thanks for standing up! :D

Since Clevo is highly reputed in the "cooling department", I opted for an HDD on a caddy especially since I'll be on AC most of the time!

@ OP -Ridding yourself of an ODD leaves your laptop with a blank space. Best would be, getting still an empty caddy to serve as dummy in the place of the ODD. Then, if you will have the need for additional storage... You know what to do next. ;)
