I like to run with a/c power in with the battery out. But when I want to use the battery I don't want to turn off my computer and then insert the battery. Does anyone know if its ok to put the battery in or take it out while the laptop is running? (im afraid to try it)

You should be fine, but to be sure, check the manual that came with your laptop.

Just don't take it out unless you're on AC! ;)

Contrary to everyone elses statements above, some laptops will not operate without a battery installed and it is not safe to remove while powered on (for the simple fact it will immediately turn off for lack of power and you could loose unsaved data). I have seen this happen with a couple Dells way back in the day. Since you (link1313) never stated what kind of laptop you have....who knows? I am guessing you have a Sager/Clevo of some sort, so odds are, you are safe. Just beware, not all laptops are created equal.

Same here. I think the whole take out your battery while on AC power is more of a nit pick thing than a rule of thumb to actually follow. :)

Actually, it is not. While keeping the battery in on AC power will generate much more heat to the laptop. This could cause early retirement for your laptop, as well as reduce the charge capacity of your battery. It is recommended to charge batteries while the laptop is off, and once fully charge, you should unplug it from the power source.

Ideally, you should charge the battery fully and pull it out and store in a fridge to preserve it's max cap. I forgot the ideal temp.

I and my bro use AC power 98% of the time, and the battery is always in the laptop, his battery's max cap went down to like 30%. Mine went to about 50% in 2 years.
