I'm trying to decide between NP5790 and Toshiba X205 but not sure which way to go. I really like the "QuickPlay" (a HP terminology?) feature where you can play CD/DVDs and even MS applications without booting up the computer. Does NP5790 have similar feature? I don't see the media buttons (play, stop, etc) in the pictures. Also the X205 review says it run very cool and quiet. Will NP5790 with 8700 run just as cool and quiet since 8700 uses less energy? By the way this forum is totally awesome and I've done most of my research here. Only if I can just make up my mind... :)

    Thanks!

I wouldn't think so. I'm getting my np5790 soon, and I'm almost positive it's not a feature. QuickPlay is something entirely unique to the HP. I mean, you could just always leave your comp on standby, but with a comp that fast anyways, I doubt boot times will be that long.

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't that a feature on most popular laptops like Dell, HP and Toshiba? It probably uses less energy too if you can play the media without the OS running in the background. It just seems like a really great feature to have.

You're right. A large number of manufacturers were using that feature in the previous generation of notebooks under a number of different names. Its unclear why they seem to be non-existent in this generation of notebooks. It may be related to Vista, or it may have been a decision by the system builders (Clevo, Compal, MSI, etc). :(

The 5760 (which I consider one of the closest last gen models to the np5790) had the feature http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3260&review=WidowPC

The NP5790 does come with a free remote, so there might be slim chance that this generations method of providing a "QuickPlay" type of system may be remote controlled as opposed to built on the system itself (if it is supported). ;)

The best way to find out for sure is to contact either Sager, Powernotebooks (Donald), or XoticPC (Justin) and ask them about the availability of the feature.

According to a post by Donald of Powernotebooks the np5790 systems with 8700M GT and free media remotes began shipping on August 10th, so we may see reviews of the system with these new parts some time next week. (Which could tell you if and how well that type of system may work).

Edit: Apparently Asus says they still have that feature in their notebooks and it is called Instant Fun Plus.
