For a Clevo / Sager machine that would be a replacement for the 8170, I think you would be looking at Q2 2012. :)

ah, thats a lil more time than i want to wait, I hope they tailor the machine to reduce the dimensions and weight to intel/nvidia/amd's new 22,28nm process! that will be fun to watch! :)

Actually I find the p8170/P170hm already quite perfect.. except that it would need some low gfx card that we could switch to for battery saving :/ That would make it completely perfect.

Also as far as I know we should be able to upgrade the graphicscard in the p170hm. I think the upgraded CPU will last for 3-6 years and upgrading the GFX in 1-2 years should allow you to play newest games even in 4years+.

    Well that's what I think & hope ;D

i think 2.2 2nd gen intel quad and 6990m should be fine for 2years atleast. I usually buy newer ones in a year. the sager i m looking to buy will be my 5th laptop in 2 years ! :)

i havent seen the p170m or 8170 physically. but reducing the die would give out less heat, so we should see a size reduction in laps. rem the whole intel ultrabook scene? :)

The smaller fab is usually offset by an increase in transistors, resulting in a very similar thermal footprint at faster speeds. I don't know if I would count on there being a significant drop. I don't think anyone buys a p170hm for it's portability :D

lol, thats true. they do increase the transistor count, but my point is for the same transistor count, its generating less heat , hence more efficient. I work with advanced Nano batteries. I notice that once the material is in nano scale, it does not have to obey the rules that have the molecular forces acting on it(like vander waals and all that). Its greatly reduced, so it should be fairly a big improvement. Believe me I dont care much about portability , my previous laptop was a 18.4inch qosmio ! :) But if we can get the same hardware at a pound less, ill take it man! :)

I hear ya. I certainly won't complain about a smaller, lighter version.
