. You can never know. And the sentence "I know that it also uses alot of resources and slows your computer down and uses power" shows that you didn't do enough research

Use Microsoft security essentials. It's free and has a very low memory footprint.
-
I Use ESET SmartSecurity 5.0 (Antivirus + Firewal)l, never had virus since installation.

Been using norton 360 for 4 years now its very good kept me out of random viruses and etc. Nortons preformance improved since 3.0 and now its 6.0 and its very fast and support for the product is great. You have to find a good deal on it usually its free after rebate but i dont like rebates so i buy mine for $12.99 3 users for 1 year. That price is usually offered twice a year far as i know. Viruses and etc can come from anywhere safe browsing and careful downloading is not enough to protect yourself.

Yes btw bad Section --> Security and Antivirus Software

Norton IS has actually been pretty good for me the last couple years. I hardly ever get notifications beyond "xyz download is safe".

I have anti-virus software installed, MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials, but I've rarely used them. It would be a shame if after more than a decade of being on the internet I still don't know how to use it

No never use local AV on my personal machines.
If I ever need to check a dodgy file I use JottiQ.
Oh and lol at viruses from tracking cookies. -
I don't run any real-time protection, I just fire up Malware bytes once per week and do a full scan.

Using an anti-virus software last 12 years (kaspersky), but never seen any serious viruses except few funny trojans from corporate network. Noticed an interest feature - if you change anti-virus software the new one always find some great horror viruses and than calms down for years
-
(CIV in your case, hehe.....well I laughed anyway -.-)
-
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 all the way. Or Microsoft Security Essentials if I'm feeling cheap. But you can get KAV pretty cheap these days (~$15 on eBay)...

My recommendations and what I have been running on my own machines as well as the work machines to guard against viruses is AVG or Avast! combined with Malwarebytes anti-malware and Ad-Aware.
In addition, running NoScript and AdBlock Plus on any web browser should be fine (last I checked IE doesn't have support for either of those) and HTTPS everywhere.
Running a computer on the internet without any form of virus protection is akin to....(insert expletive comment about street walkers here without protection).
Also about as irresponsible as playing WoW or any high profile MMORPG without an authenticator.
Frankly I laugh at the folks that claim "well it will never happen to me". It only takes one time, one shot and a hacker can ruin your day very quickly.
Some viruses don't even require you to click on the links or download anything, they are loaded in flash and java with the video and in some cases, all a person had to do was simply mouse over the link without clicking to get a virus.
Be safe, be smart, get some GOOD virus protection and don't be a victim. -
Of course. I use on access AV scanning, and a firewall, and a network firewall, and a program to screen the sites I visit, and I run a patched OS+browser, and I am careful about where I browse, and so on. It is called defense in depth, meaning that should one layer of defense fail, you aren't automatically screwed. It is the only way to have good security, physical or virtual.

Yes, aside from anti virus program running adblock plus extension is also a great idea. Though I ended up uninstalling no-script addon because it made me too paranoid. When I had it on I always felt like I was constantly under attack.
-
A prime example of a website that is heavy in blocked content by NoScript is the wow.joystiq.com site. I had to go through quite the list on what to allow and what to block.
But I would have to say, I would much rather go through that hassle than have my Warcraft account compromised. The Warcraft news websites are the reason I got NoScript and Malwarebytes to begin with, not because of viruses from their website, but because of news of a new hacker attack and which tools were effective in preventing the attacks. -
Since you can get a good free Antivirus such as MSE or Avast there is really no excuse.
The comment concerning resources plus looking at the specifications of your system leaves me speechless. You have more RAM and a faster CPU than me and your SSD is good too.
I have Online Armour, Adaware, Avast and MB on my system and I don't even notice they are there (until they catch a rogue site or file). All of my games and everything else I do performs exactly the same. You aren't giving enough credit to the power and efficiency of current CPU's. -
I really like avast, it seems to be doing me good now for several years, no virus's that I can think of. Just the few times it scares me when I dont turn my speakers down and she tells me my software has been updated.

I like noscript+adblockplus+MSE+malwarebytes with firefox. Works like a charm, the only thing that can get me now is if some psychotic hacker is specifically targeting me. Also, if you still think that AV will slow down your computer, you might want to go back and check everything that's happened within the last 20 years. Did you know that we have dual core processors now?
