Question for anyone who has a negative opinion about glossy, do you find it annoying aside from possible glare under direct sunlight? Can you see your own reflection under normal lighting and use? Do you have bad eye strain or headache after extended use? I am trying to decide between that and matte! I think the vibrant colors would be rather nice, but not if the bad outweighs the good

Glossy really doesn't bother me at all. You can see your reflection in normal lighting only if the background is black and you really strain to see it. I in fact prefer it over matte screens because it just looks nicer, really. Just take the glossy, 'cause there's really nothing wrong with it unless you live in California and you're outside 100% of the time you're using the computer, and you're without shade.

I prefer glossy screens too. They just seem to have a lot more clarity than matte screens and I am not bothered by things being reflected by it. My Toshiba X205 (in signature) has a 17" 1680*1050 TruBrite (glossy) screen and it is very sharp and clear.

I prefer glossy screens as well. My mom has a Toshiba that has a matte screen, and for a while I was regretting my glossy screen because I have light on sometimes, but when I played a game on her Toshiba....just didn't look as vibrant as on my glossy screen. The colors on glossy screens to me look much better, but there are times when matte finished screens are a must like that cali scenario as stated above lol.

glossy just makes things more.. crisp.. i dunno how to explain it. It seems like better resolution and more vibrant colors. I feel like matte is somehow distorting.

I prefer matte, because you can always remove the matte filter for a glossy result if you prefer glossy, but there's no way of going from glossy to matte.

Ok, I think I will get glossy then. Should I go with 1920 or 1680 ? I'm leaning towards 1920 but I was a little worried about frame rate in native res, I Could always size down the resolution if I need to I assume. These three things were bothering me most; glossy or matte, 1920 or 1680, and Vista or Xp. I think it will be glossy, 1920, and vista 64 bit. Thanks for your replies everyone

I am never planning on using the computer outside or around bright windows, so my main concern was whether or not it would be reflecting a 60 watt bulb overhead which isnt very bright.

IMO glossy just makes everything so much crisper, brighter and nicer in general. The good far outweighs the bad of sometimes getting glare.

you should be fine in that situation, I have a 60W bulb above and haven't noticed it yet...

Also I really would recommend the 1920, its so pretty ;) and I have had no problems using vista x64

Yes, I've had those issues - but then again, I always have to work in very light environments.

As far as brightness, sharpness, color, etc, etc, I've seen killer (as in great) matte screens at times. I got dell monitor's at work that are 1337 :D Man I'd like to get those on a notebook!

Anyway if you don't plan to use your PC in a very brightly lit area, glossy would be likely be fine or even preferred. I don't think a 60w bulb will be too much trouble. But put a 100 watter in by mistake and wham!!! :D

don't worry about the frame rate. I got 40+fps in Assassin's Creed, Colin: dirt, all max setting with 1920x1200. Crysis, however, 34fps all high under 1280x1024, computer won't let me choose any higher resolution.

just a little tips, if you don't like the glossy, you can always put a screen protector on to make it "matt"

I just realized I was planning on possibly using my 19 inch flatscreen LG with the 5793. This is bad because first of all its not glossy and it really only supports 1440x900. Maybe I shouldnt spend the extra $100 for 1920x1200 if I plan on using this LG. But I may end up just using the laptops display and skipping this monitor entirely

i actually prefer glossy myself especially after seeing mostly crappy matte screens of late. this is one area i feel notebook companies have skimped out on in the recent past they have been dishing out terrible displays and they seem, to only be getting worse from a lot of companies... sager seems to be somewhat better about this.. imo dell is the worst

But that requires paying for the screen protector. The reverse process -- taking the matte filter off for a glossy screen -- is free.

Also, may I inquire who that is in your avatar?

Oh I know nirvana, just that its 17 inch vs 19 inch widescreen thats all

I will probably just pay the extra $95 for 1920 just in case, it's not really that big of a deal

I've tried that and unfortunately, it doesn't work well.

For one, it's still not a "matte" as it does have reflections, although they are much less. But worst of all, the color and brightness got washed out in a very noticeable way.

Glossy only bothers me sometimes when it`s very sunny outside.
But it would bother me less to have a matte screen with less brightness...

I wouldn't trade my glossy for anything.

The only time I see my reflection is when I am booting up.

during normal use i enver notice anything.

i don't use it outside though and i am almost always in a controlled indoor environment.

    quality is fantastic.

It doesn't bother me but am having another problem. I get asthma when using my laptop or desktop which I never had before in my life. I really work on the laptop and desktop many hours and I am thinking may be the heat coming from the laptop vents are causing it. I am seeking some kind of acrylic large box to place an open laptop into where it would be sealed and I don't have to breathe it in but I don't think there is such thing. It probably would overheat too. Am picturing like a baby incubator where you put your hands in and have some hose go outside your window LOL This is hilarious but if they sold something like this I would buy it in a hurry. I try to put clear plastic garbage bag over my laptop to see if the heated air would go downwards but it still bothers me being it's still open. I hope I don't get any response back like I am a nut here. I did get a few from another website and it hurts. I hope someone understands. If anyone knows of anything being made please let me know. I read a discussion in this website someone wrote similar to me and I emailed him and hope I hear from him too but he wrote message back in 2006.

When they are new, computers are releasing some substances in the air. Please keep your room very well aired in the first weeks after purchase.

Glossy doesn't bother me one bit. I first actually heard about glossy and matte options on a screen when I came to this forum. I was advised to goto a nearby store and see glossy and matte laptops so I get an idea how they are and see what I prefer. I never bothered to do that. I got my laptop with a great glossy screen, which as I said before, does not manage to bother me one bit. Hell, infact, I LOVE IT!! And when I look back now at my desktop monitor, I almost throw up!!

Yea,my older CRT is definitely a disaster compared to my WUXGA screen.
I`d have to say that the screen is if not the most important, but one of the most important parts of the laptop.
You`re stuck with it , so get the best one yet!
