i really want to buy a external hard drive that can take advantage of those features. Does my laptop have the port necessary to connect firewire?

yes 9260 has firewire, and no not necessary to connect through firewire, USB also work.
-
is the Mini-IEEE 1394 Port another name for "Firewire" port?
-
mini-ieee = 4 pin
regular firewire = 6 pin
4 pin is smaller but 6 pin has power supply. -
will i still see a huge performance difference in Data transfer if i use the firewire port rather than the USB?
-
the firewire on your machine is first generation aka Firewire 400, which has 400MB/sec transfer rate, however, USB 2.0 has 480MB/sec.
the second generation of Firewire aka Firewire 800 offers 800MB/sec, but it is only equid on Mac. -

Even though the Firewire interface is slower than USB, Firewire is still faster in real life performance.
Firewire uses a different architecture which makes it more effective than USB.
Quote from wikipedia: "Although high-speed USB 2.0 runs at a higher signaling rate (480 Mbit/s) than FireWire 400,
typical USB PC-hosts rarely exceed sustained transfers of 280 Mbit/s, with 240 Mbit/s being more typical."

1394a (6pin) is 400Mb/s while 1394b (9pin) is 800Mb/s.
There is a new standard 1394c but not in use atm.
1394a is faster than USB 2.0 when using my Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB external HDD. I've tried both and HDTach'd both. 1394a is the way to go if you can. -
i capture HD video content from my camcorder and i have to do it through firewire because it is much faster than usb.
-
Wu Jen are you sure they are 6pin and 9pin? dang my knowledge is getting rusty

6 Pin 400Mb/s
9 Pin 800Mb/s
Does my Sager 9260(D900C) have firewire support?
