Ok! So after a bit of observation I have some points to make. When I first started using this 5793 I had what I will call the default fan setting, I had not touched fn1 or fn3 yet. This involved the fans reving every so often to maintain a certain temperature and then shutting off, as the temps began to rise again they would kick back on and repeat. That of course was while being idle or doing simple tasks such as web browsing, desktop things. Now, upon entering any game the fans would kick up, not to full speed (will get to that a minute), but not reving either. They would run constant and fairly strong to keep temps normalized in the 50-60c range even in crysis demo, but they were not too loud. I liked this feature for games like crysis, but I didn't like it for older games like WoW or heroes of might and magic 3, where I believe it remained and seemed unecessary.

Then I decided to finally mess with fn1 and fn3. Fn1 is LOUD and very fast. This must be full speed. I instantly thought of a blow dryer for hair. This one isn't practical for me and I would prefer not using it. So then I went to fn3, this is really nice for idling at desktop, very quiet and constant. But the problem is the speed doesn't really seem to change at all in games, in WoW for example I watched the temp creeping up to 60c and a bit over, the fans didn't seem to increase at all during this time. I have not tried it in the crysis demo yet, I'll get to that soon but I have a feeling it will be the same. One thing I noticed while WoW was open, while in game the temps would creep up, while alt tabbed out they would begin to drop, tab back in and they increase. So apparently the cooling is not really doing anything until it hits what people call the "high throttle zone" or something, but I have no idea when this is. Finally getting back to the original point, once I activate fn1 or fn3, there is no way to get back to what I called the default fan setting. I am unsure if restarting will revert the system back to this setting, where you then use fn1/fn3 again to deactivate it and take control. I am going to test this later but right now I am too lazy to restart and I forgot to do it earlier today. So any thoughts ? Has anyone had a similar experience ? I am thinking about maybe getting a cooler, I know that 45-60c temps are below the maximums but I am very paranoid about it. I want them as low as I can go

default fan setting = auto mode
    Fn+1 = full blast
press Fn+1 again = auto mode
    Fn+3 = mid speed
I don't know about Fn+3 for gaming, I usually leave it to auto

thanks nirvana ! that clears things up for me. I was the under the impression that fn1 only had the 1 setting , didn't mess with it much

45-60deg is freaking COLD harry, under load, my cpu gets to ~75 and my gfx to ~70. You should only be getting paranoid when they start hitting 90+

Except for hard drives; those shouldnt be getting above 60deg

    Harry, it`s been covered.
The GPU is ok upto 85C.
The CPU is ok upto 70-75C, but if you want a cooler CPU here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
Also, get the newest firmware for the fans, which keeps them from powering off(the GPU one at least).
http://64.208.175.44/pages/notebooks/download.cfm?ProductType=5792 last thing on the page.
Download, burn image to disk with Nero, reboot, follow instructions, listen to beep, reboot(or shutdown, whichever is instructed),enjoy a better auto fan mode.

    Yea.My first thought was :"I don`t understand these 5793 fanboys" .
I swear,my main priority once I get back in the US in late June will be to make a thread directing to sager firmware, guide to cooling the laptop,OCing,UVing and Shyster1`s and my OT gringolada :D

I caught the temp around 70c yesterday in crysis demo, so we have that in common theriko. Fn1b was on, not the fastest setting. Eleron I think I may have the newest firmware which came preloaded though I'm not positive. I figured the lower your temps, the longer that device will last over time. But as long as you aren't going over the maximum they should hold.

Also I am looking at undervolting now, thanks eleron

I'm glad to hear you find auto and medium modes pretty quiet. I'm ordering my 5793 on Monday, and while I know that the fans won't bother me, there was some discussion in another thread that they may be loud enough (even on low speeds) to bother people in classes. You appear to be on the side against that argument, then?

Well I think it depends callidor, you would definitely want to use fn3 if you were in class. Fn1 full blast is too loud and auto is fine except for when it revs up and then cuts off shortly after, this is louder and would be too distracting for other people. That applies while being idle or doing desktop work only, once you've entered a game or your cpu usage gets high in general the fans will kick on and stay on, and it is quite a bit louder at that point (this is on auto). For me auto speed is perfect for cpu intensive tasks such as games and I use headphones so I'm not bothered by it, I am sure speaker users feel the same. It keeps things cool and it's not overly noisy like full blast. Now for fn3, this is not a loud setting at all and it's constant, it does not rev or change atleast under normal situations unless your temp or usage hits a certain mark (high) from a game for example, then auto will take over. Now if you were in a very quiet testing or library type setting, people near you may become annoyed simply because of the constant low hum. However if you're in a somewhat typically noisy or better yet a computer related area such as a lab or around other computers, no one will even notice it. But ultimately you will just have to see for yourself as everyone is different. Personally I think fn3 is fine and not much if at all louder than other laptops.

Thanks for that. +rep. I definately think I'll just keep in fn+3 mode for classes then. I can't imagine that there should be any reason for web browsing or word processing to raise the temps beyond what "medium" can handle.

Hey, while we're on the topic, I just have a question out of curiosity. Let's say I walk out of my room for an hour, walk back in, and don't remember what mode I left the fans on. Is there any way, besides just listening to the system, to tell what mode it's on? I suppose in that sort of situation I could always just do something like hit fn+1, see if it speeds up, then hit it again. Then if it slowed down, I would know that I was on auto..
