Hello guys, as the title says, I would like to downgrade my card. This may seems to be odd, but my GTX485M started to act up and I decided to change it to GTX285M which I have laying around collecting dust from my older X8100.

    The specs are as follows:
    i7 2820QM
    GeForce GTX 485M
    12GB RAM
    Full HD 95% Gamut display

When I replace the graphics card, the BIOS successfully detected the GTX285M. However after I enter windows, I cannot seem to install the driver for this graphics card even though I downloaded a new one from Nvidia website, it says that the installer couldn't find a compatible graphics card. Do you think I need to flash the Vbios to make it work? Does any of you Vbios ROM for this card?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm really noob on this mobile graphics upgrade stuff

I don't think the 347.09 drivers are compatible with cards as old as your 285M.

Have you tried this one out? Drivers | GeForce

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "acting up"? What's up with your 485m exactly?

Thank you all for your reply, the modified INI driver does work well!

Long story short, my laptop gpu fan has failed numerous time due to defective fan connector, after I change the connector, the laptop works fine. However when the connector doesn't work, my GPU will just go to the tj limit and shuts off itself. I think that is what kills my GPU. Now when the temp hit 75C+ screen will freeze.

Another question, if I want to upgrade it to 980m, do I have to modify something? Because I believe 980m TDP is lower than 485M thus generate lower heat, CMIIW.

sadly as far as we know the 980 will not work in a HM or EM models otherwise i would have bought one.

i know theres been a few techys playing about with a 980 in our models but not seen any feedback yet.

Aww.. Waiting for that day to come.. What is the problem on putting 980 on HM? Is it the VBIOS?

EM has prema bios mod for 980M, but HM is dead in the water

System BIOS is the problem. Best you'd get is 680M or MAYBE 780M. 680M ain't bad though, especially with a solid OC. Especially for a machine that old

If you can get a cheap 680m that would be a big upgrade over your original card still.
