Hey there...
So, lately (actually, it's been like so for a while, on/off) it would seem that my HD 6970M is making these weird buzz/hiss/whine noises which seriously annoys me. It's like they happen anywhere. I've tried running with max clocks, more and less voltages, leaving everythnig default - it keeps on happening. In AC and on battery. I don't know if it's just noises that GPUs sometimes can make or if it's on its way out. BTW, am I right in assuming that it IS most likely the gpu if the noise comes from like the middle of the keyboard? I might be clueless... I just couldnt think of anything else...
Regardless, it's melting my brains. I'm not really gaming anymore, only old games which arent that demanding (I play most of them with my GPU clocks locked at 200/150) so I was thinking if it was possible to replace the 6970M with a compatible card that could perhaps do things more cool, so that perhaps power could be saved but most of all - less fan noise would be emitted along with the demise of the terrible whining noises, hopefully.
Any suggestions? I was thinking something nVidia, but I honestly don't know and I've never upgraded anything in a laptop besides RAM, HDD and WLAN card, so yeah...
Thanks!

Sounds like coil whine. You could attempt some of the fixes suggested on the Internet for that such as nail varnish.
Something like a 460m would work. -
How does a 460M compare with a 6970m heat wise

It's quite a bit less powerful but about as much cooler, about half to two thirds the power consumption.

Where on earth do you people find GPUs for our Clevos :/? The only ones I find on ebay are some insaaaanely expensive ones.

Have you looked through the members market on here?

It does sound like something other than the GPU. It could be coil whine or just one of the fans, or perhaps the speakers. The GPU is on the right hand rear of the keyboard anyway, so there is no particular reason it would be that.

When the high pitch is there (today it has been ok) it's quite loud when putting my ear next to the HDD caddy where the 2nd hdd is but also indeed from the middle of the keyboard. I mean, such high tones can be hard to pin, I guess? I just also hear alot of other sounds from the GPU, which comes from the middle of the keyboard... not as annoying sounds and they're hard to describe, but it's from the same area.
By the way, Tmets, what temps do you get while idling/light use and under loading?
These are my idle

40-45 on the CPU and GPU, 30-40 on the SSD and HDD.
As I said, the GPU is not in the middle of the keyboard. How do you know the sounds are from the GPU?
I suggest you remove the base, and listen directly to the GPU. There would be little point buying another GPU without knowing if that is actually what is wrong. GPUs don't make odd sounds even of they are about to fail. -
I don't really know what else... But actually replacing the gpu seems to be unlikely to happen -

Yes that's coil whine all right and a gpu accelerated app would cause a change in pitch/noise.
"Downgrading" P150HM from 6970M? Suggestions?
