If you got the key snapped back on again, it might still be OK. If you actually punched a hole through it, maybe not. If you severed any circuits in the membrane, most likely ruined. If it missed all of the circuitry, may be fine.

I'll do an examination and see what happened.
To ask since I've gotten things apart. Is it possible to replace that keyboard wit a mechanical one? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No, it would just be the same one. Mech keyboards are much thicker.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Okay I will see what the damage is to this one . -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Okay I'm still stuck. Where is the spot to remove this top section will it become loose after a certain screw on the bottom?

Separating the top and bottom chassis is best done within a guitar pick type plastic tool that you insert into the seam between top and bottom casings. Run this along and it should unclip any plastic.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Will a guitar pick work or does it have to be thinner or longer? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Anything that's similar, it does not need to be overly long, just reasonably strong.
-

-
Yeah, you had a nice short that ate up some of the mobo. Time for a replacement, or a new PC.
-
Yeah, that torched a bunch of stuff. You may have needed another keyboard anyway. Probably needs switches, speakers and heaven knows what else. Might not look so grim after you clean all the soot off, but it looks awful in those pictures.

Its a pile of char goes right into the board. Some of the later pics I posted show it after I cleared off the pile of burned out bits. Not even layers just burned ash. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Once a multilayer board has damage going into the layers it's game over.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Yea it's super toast in there that space where the chips were is nothing but a mess of charred ruins. What kinds replacement repair work could I be looking at cost wise? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You will need to ask from quotes from local companies to see that.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
So I'd be looking into someplace that stocks parts they could put towards replacement?
Because right now the answer I'm getting is they either don't do that work or because it's not one of their builds they cannot. -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Any builders have older models returns or just unused builds for sale. Don't have a lot but I could put funds towards a GTX 980 Kabby Lake system if those are still around.
I mean if I can't find a replacement board. -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Talking with representative from LPC Digital email they've contacted someone at Sager and said they got a price quote on parts and labor.
Which is good as that's a bit lower than what I've seen for even just a replacement board on ebay.
Though I've got questions about the labor that would be done and what such a turnaround would cost with shipping and all since I would also have to order a new power supply at that time given mine is unreliable now. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Labor would cover fitting and testing new parts.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Well to add to that how would new parts be tested? I mean in absence of all the other pieces. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well you've not been very clear but it sounds like you are being quoted for sending it in and having it serviced. For major issues this is usually recommended.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Though my question I am trying to word is do I send all the parts in for this procedure? The cpu memory and gpu along with the dead board and chassis. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's a question for pro-star and what they have organised for you.
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Well LPC Digital sent me a Sager support ticket number.
Should I contact Pro Star as well? -
Prostar Computer Company Representative
If you purchased through Mythlogic, unfortunately no. If Sager & LPC Digital are willing to help and already have a ticket open, you'll have to defer to them. -

Getting that, going now. Thank you for your time. -

To ask what is the best way to contact or to ask how is email turnaround from Sager?
Seeing about getting a better understanding of this repair/replacement process. -

You can use our support form to speak to the team.

Honestly seeing how multiple 7xxZM boards literaly went in flames on the same exact place on the board, I'd say just sell the parts or fix it then sell it as a whole. I would never recommend having a fire hazard in your house. You never know when that thing catches fire again when you go on the toilet and burns more than just the mainboard this time aka your house.Fastidious Reader likes this.

You have a point had I not been awake it would have been a lot worse.
Eluktronics looks to have good models on sale. Checking them out for replacement. The new i7-8750H will run about the same as I had the i7-4790k underclocked at if I go with something not a desktop CPU model.
Or go with a 8700k and 1080 Clevo and put my drive back in one of those.
Though first I'll look towards what I can get for those parts. -

Okay it doesn't look like the Sager thing is going to work out. So just gonna sell off the parts I have and wait a bit while the Nvidia news causes prices to drop a little.
Looking into models with i7-8750H and a GTX 1060. Seen some nice thin Clevo in that format. -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Found a builder Eluktronics. They don't have much in the way if bells and whistle options but I've heard their builds are pretty solid. They've been doing their own SSD units for a while now. Also solid reviews.

DaMafiaGamer Switching laptops forever!
In fact, lol, clevo has one of the best motherboards in terms of circuitry, mofsets and ic's used. They blow alienware and msi out of the water with the least motherboards failing, some still do. I have NEVER had an issue with a clevo motherboard up till now, I even butchered a part of my clevo p770dm-g when upgrading it to a gtx 1070 mxm, ripped off an m.2 ssd slot, knocked off a resistor and two capacitors and what do you know IT BOOTS!
You ever do that on something like an alienware and be sure to be 10 feet away from it before it blows up lol.
Every rail, whether it be 12v, 5v or 3.3v has a LOT of protection on clevo motherboards, enough said! MSI isn't terrible in terms of circuit design but alienware is rubbish, you'll be sure to notice a lot of people with overclockable cpu's having fried mofsets on the mobo due to poor quality.Last edited: Aug 19, 2018Papusan and GrandesBollas like this. -

No doubt. It's a rare occasion for such an event to occur. Still mine is slag and I'm thinking of waiting till the RTX rollout and the GTX 10s start dropping in price a bit more before going into a new laptop. See they'll even continue with the RTX series into laptops. -
Yeah the best get caught sometimes. EVGA got supplied a bad batch of caps that caused a lot of failures on otherwise very decent GPU boards. Yea the soldered area even without the damage didn't look like the best job. Guess it was just one of those things. Just gotta salvage what one can and move on.DaMafiaGamer likes this.
