I've gotten kinda bored with nvidia, so im thinking if i get this laptop i would get the ATi Mobile Viper Radeon 3870HD 512MB DDR3 XTREME GPU instead of the 8800mgtx, same with my desktop i might switch to ati with the 4000 series,
does anyone know if ati is better at all?
-
too early to tell. we are not even sure if HD 3870 is gonna be on it.
-
There is a option for it so i dont see why.

oh dear, lol PCMW has made alot of promises. I wouldn't count on it.
-
-
Go for the 8800!
As stated, PCMW has some wacky options which may or may NOT actually be delivered. -
im definitely thinking of switching to ati anyways...
-
desktop wise, they're dropping the price for the gtx 280 quite alot because of ATI, possibly going to match their price. And the ATI has been unproven so far in the latest cards, so I would stick with Nvidia. You can't really "get bored" with a company like you would with a toy. I'm not following your "bored" logic for why you want to switch.
-
im actually getting bored with nvidia too. i like the sound of the name viper!
-
Yea, ATI is like an intelligent gpu maker! i'm sure their HD4870X2 will pawn GTX 280 easily!!
nvidia on the other hand just upgrades minor components and launches cards under a new name!!(mostly desktop gpus)
for instance - nvidia launched 9800 GTX desktop gpu, then ATI launched their new 55nm gpus, so nvidia also went for a die shrink on 9800 GTX and released 9800 GTX+ with 55nm chip!! within like a time of 2 months(i guess)!!!
the ppl who had purchased 9800 GX2s just a few weeks back, have their gpus outdated already!
ATI on the other hand makes major modifications to their cards and releases new gpus which r worthy of an upgrade!! not just a die shrink nd stuff!
I recently bought HD4850 for my desktop and it is comparable to an 8800 GTS for much less!! -
well thats all irrelivant sohail since these are laptop gpu's. whats so bad with keeping the same technology? if its not broken, dont fix it, just improve it. Thats what they do.
-
yea! sry! i totally forgot abt laptops!!
btw i love my 8800m GTX more than anything else!!
besides ATI GPUs for laptops will see upgrades after quite some time i guess!
i love nvidia for the fact that they release new gpus both for laptops and desktops quite frequently!!
Tks for guiding me back!
EDIT -
In the end I'd say ATI for desktops and nvidia for laptops!
btw i'd really like to see an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4870X2!!!! -

We're not going to know anything until it's released. The vast majority of the "Clevo M860TU" thread is speculation based on frankly misleading options posted by PCMW.

Any speculation on when this card is coming out? I'm looking into the 860 like everyone else but am not in a terrible rush to get one. I'm just curiously if its just by the end of summer or year or a few weeks etc... Thanks.
-
Just because they make "major modifications" doesn't mean they are significantly better, and even if they are, they still have a ways to go on catching up to nVidia.

If the new card performs 95% as well but runs significantly cooler, costs half as much and takes up 50% less power you wont even consider it?
-
Eh... well I guess the power thing takes it for me... unless they get that hybrid SLI thing working. But then again, most of the people here have it plugged in most of the time to run intensive programs (games, animation) so what we want is better. But from a budget buyer whos kinda strapped for cash and haven't made a purchase yet (ME!), then 95% well and the lower cost.... sure, but I don't think that would be possible physically.
-
I dont know... i have never used an ati in a desktop and know nothing about them.
I pprobably would, but atm i would say no because im insecure to go away from nvidia. -
why do you say your raptor drive is kinda wierd? 10,000RPM is not that strange.
15,000rpm, now thats a bit much.... unles you run a data intensive server. -
no, its just that I haven't seen a 160 gb raptor on newegg or anything, and when I RMAed my 150gb one, they gave me this.
-
the one i got was a 149gb. close enough.
-
is that after formatting?
-
I cant remember.... lol sorry. Its actually sitting here in front of me but i dont have a computer to hook it too (i sold my desktop to be able to buy a nice high spec laptop (the np8860))
edit: i guess after format then -
Any hard drive sold is sold in standard metric units - e.g. 200GB is 200 billion bytes. When formatted, the computer uses base 2 so instead of 1KB being 1000B, it's 1024B, so the drive size is effectively reduced - 200GB becomes 186.26GB. They have been doing this since hard drives past the 1GB mark.
In your case 160GB becomes 149.01GB -
yeah. my "320"gb external only has 298
-
Yeah, and my old 150gb raptor only had 139 aprox after formatting.
