I have a Seagate Freeagent 750GB external hard drive and it was working decent with USB 2.0. However, I am trying out my new Esata cable on it and all I am able to do is to explore files on it via windows explorer. However, when I try to run a file, like an avi, it does not open. I was told Esata is supposed to be extremely fast compared to USB. What could be happening here?

New development: I did a HD tune benchmarking on the drive, it seems the drive goes from a miniumum of 0.1 MB/sec to a massive jump of 80 MB/sec (the speed of my own hard drive), however, it takes an incredibly long time to get a reading. I'm hoping its something software based, (I have Seagate Autobackup tools and FreeAgent monitoring tools installed) or driver based and nothing to do with the cable.

Are Esata cables supposed to be short? Because this one I got is 6ft. Also, this one is touching the ground and close to other cables such as sound cables.

    6 Foot?

    Mine are all 3 foot.

But I doubt that is the cause of your issue as I recall reading what the
max length is and it is more than 6 foot.

Can you try it on another computer or another eSata drive on the one your talking about?

I have 4 TB drives, all eSata and all work around 45mbps when performing file transfers.

How fast was it with USB 2.0?

I cannot test it on another drive as I do not have another Esata capable system nor another Esata capable drive. On USB 2.0, I would get real life transfers at about 20-22 MB/sec.

I'm now reading some Seagate forums and seeing that the FreeAgent pro 1TB apparantly has problems with slow Esata transfers. I shall email Seagate and see if the problem exists with my drive as well. If this is the case, then I will consider a return or refund.

So i called them, apparantly, it may be Clevo's support for the Esata drivers on the m860tu. Anyone else using the m860tu and using esata hard drive?

Sorry, no eSata here. USB rate seems decent though. I'm starting to think the hardware itself is great but the drivers really epic fail.

Yes, at least the hardware (most expensive thing) seems to be ok. Well, time to wait for Clevo to get some good Esata support on this thing. Til then, I'll USB it. Just not as much High Def. editing as I would have hoped.

Is the M860TU that different from the M570TU that his eSata would have such different performance values from mine?

One of my TB drives is also a Seagate FreeAgent.

On a side note, I love the lights on it :)

Well, the blu ray as we know already is different, so we can only imagine. I'll email Clevo about it.

Yes, the lights are great, I don't need to cover them in the night like some other hard drives I had that made it seem like the room was having a blue themed party.

I bought the Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition, as it has eSata connection as well as USB 2.0, Firewire...

It had really good reviews. I'll check the transfer rates on it as soon as I can hook it up to my laptop. The laptop has to go back for some fixes first though. Might take a while. :S

My Fantom Greendrive, 1 TB keeps a steady 30MBps... :)
Anyhow, on a side note, first thing to check...take the hdd on another e-sata capable computer and compare results.
God forbid , your e-sata port might be misbehaving..

What's the average transfer rate for eSata?

I avg 43-46mbps on WD, Seagate and an enclosure I built with a WD drive.

Lol, I'd love to. But consider the fact that I had to order an Esata cable online because no computer store down here sells them, at least not yet. So that should give you an idea of how technology advanced the location is and why everyone wants to get my m860tu. Only three brands are really known, Dell, Toshiba and Alienware (this one being more so the elite computer you hear about but noone actually has one).
I think its the perfect market for a OCZ and Clevo reseller.
    What you guys think? :D

P.S. I don't think its the port malfunctioning either. Because I use the same port for the USB connection and it works perfectly. (m860tu has a USB/Esata combo port)

    The cable might be suspect.

Take the drive and cable to Best Buy or another retailer for testing on one of their systems with eSata.

Lol, no best buys here. I hope its not the cable because its new. Don't have to many options. I can just hope its the m860tu esata drivers. I emailed clevo, so we'll see what happens out of that.
