Greetings all-
This is probably my final question before I pull the trigger. I know what I want, I just need to figure out who I want it from.
I recently spoke to 2 vendors (both active here) and got quite a different answer regarding build times. One said 10 business days, but they are a lot more expensive (by about $300) for the same build. The other vendor offers a better deal, but they said it might take up to 20 business days to build!! That's a month before it even ships.
I did verify with both vendors that they have the parts I am requesting in stock. I always build my own PCs so I know a lot about putting a system together. Now that I am getting a laptop I have to choose from a laptop vendor that will customize one for me. That being said I find it hard to believe it will take so long to throw (in-stock) parts into a laptop chassis, apply the OS image, and test everything out.
I am quite hesitant to drop $2500 for a product that might not arrive for a month. Am I alone in feeling this way?? Maybe I am worrying over nothing and the build will only take a week, but I am wary.
So do you guys think these times somewhat exaggerated for CYA (Cover Your A$$) purposes or is there some other hold-up?? To anyone who has ordered theirs in the last few weeks, have you gotten your laptop yet??
-
depends which companys you are talking about and how many people they have in the queue waiting.
i would rather be told it will take a month and then turn up in 2-3 weeks instead of being told 2 weeks and it take a month.
im just about to order as well and wish mine was your price. mine is costing £2100 or $3300 here in the uk -
Assuming the ten day quote came from mythlogic, they are straight shooters. The other company may be coverying their hides or backed up. I'm on my third waiting for a production email from MALIBAL

I waited 44 days for mine. Wasn't so bad now that I look back.
-
was told by myth that its gonna ship around the 11th, but it appears too many people ordered the 7970 >.< But hey, this laptop is gonna last me throughout my college so i guess i am fine waiting for it for a month
-
I ordered from LPC-Digital on June 29 and received my laptop at my doorstep July 10. That spanned 2 weekends and the 4th of July without any hitch. I don't see why other Sager resellers would take any longer.
-
So I sent some more emails and got the following responses from 2 different vendors:

Vendor 1:

Vendor 2:

So these vendors can make my order happen in 2-3 business days!! One even gave me $80 off, besting the $50 promo discount some other vendors are offering right now. That's a lot different than 10-20 business days I was told by other vendors. Even 7-12 business days is well over 2 weeks. I made it a point to ask if the parts I want are in stock and was told they are by every vendor. How, given they have the same stock, can some vendors be very reasonable with their build times and others so outrageous??
I think it is clear who I am going to do business with. I will post my overall impressions of the whole process, and give credit to the vendor who was very reasonable with discounts and build times, once I have the laptop in hand.

The Sager I ordered from LPC-Digital took maybe 5 business days to build if I recall correctly, the rest of the waiting time consisted of mailing the money order, final testing before shipping, and the shipping itself. Took about 2 1/2 weeks total from when I ordered to when I received it.
-
Hmm, just for curiosity sake who is vendor 2?
-
I am gonna refrain from revealing who said what for now. After I get the system I will start another post with the results of this whole process and the true time it took to get my system. If I can truly get a custom laptop delivered in about a week, it might cause the other vendors (those who take a month) to take note.
I have always built my own desktops so I have never gone through the custom laptop purchase process. I want to let others who are new to this know how the process can go. I took my time, contacted 5 different vendors, and got the best complete deal. This is not only about money, and I am hesitant to make public a discount I got so the vendor doesn't have to get hit with others expecting the same. This is also to make it known that some vendors offer Rush Processing and some offer free shipping and you never know what you'll get until you ask the vendor.
I am placing my order first thing tomorrow morning and the timer will start then. I will start a new thread when I have the system and detail the whole process in more detail.

Through Powernotebooks, my notebook was built and shipped from Sager within 5 business days. Powernotebooks then promptly shipped to me and the package took only a day to travel from Nevada to California. I ordered online on a Thursday one week, and the package arrived 12 days later, including the weekend.
-
I placed my order on 6/6 and went into Phase 2 on 6/29 which means it is still at Sager. I don't think it would have mattered which reseller I used, I just got unlucky on the Sager part of it.
-
@gcrain: you placed your order on 6/6 and have yet to recieve your laptop?
-
They were still on backorder on the 7970m which I believe they got in on on 6/11.
-
Mine took 2 days to build, test and ship.
-
I'm not sure why it is taking so long at Sager. My understandng is once they got the 7970m in they had plenty to fulfill all current orders.
-
Am I missing something here? What is taking all these weeks???
It must be that the parts are NOT all there and these vendors are waiting on someone else to ship something so they can install it. What else could it be?
-J -
If they have all the parts that you want, then yes it should not take more than 3-4 days to get it shipped.
-
but you asked this question yesterday. if you buy tonight it normally takes 3 days for monies to clear and then the build starts. there could of been 50 orders for all we know since then so they could be out of parts by now.
this is just an idea from other customers of other resellers in the past that have to be taken into consideration. -
shouldn't the payment get cleared the day you paid it? unless you did it via cash payment :/
-
not sure. even some card companys take 3 days to clear.
Estimated Build Times: Too long???
