Hey, had a question I was hoping some of you could shed some light on,
I'm looking into buying the Clevo M860TU from one of those three distributors. I had a preference to buy from Eurocom since it's based in Canada and would probably get to me quicker, but there is a massive price discrepancy.
I've configured the models the same(9800 GT, 4 gigs Ram)
Xotic and PNB's Sager NP8660 run just over $2000 USD... this includes windows which I would otherwise have to buy(something I don't mind)
Eurocom costs over $2600 CDN without windows.
Is there something I'm missing? Why is Eurocom significantly more costly?
Any other Canadians purchased from Xotic/PNB and found an absurd duty fee for when the item was shipped to you to cross the border?

You can contact Eurocom, they are known to negotiate pricing if its reasonable.
But you can also order from a US vendor (like XoticPC) and ship it to Canada... many NBR members have done that. -

Because Canada is the technological third world. Don't let the abundant food and nice homes fool you. I'm in the exact same boat. Eurocom's prices are ridiculous. I'm trying to work out the customs, shipping, and currency exchange issues now so I can order from XoticPC. Its hard to get hold of CBSA to get them to answer any questions.

Interesting, thanks for the replies. I wonder if 600 dollars off is reasonable to eurocom.
someguy: if you do figure out how much extra it's going to cost, would it be a big problem if I ask you to send me a PM with that information.. or post it here?
Thanks -
Just give Eurocom a call.. thats best. If you cant, then an email is good enough.

you want crazy prices check out the raptor md9 from velocity micro...$3600 as a starting price. what's up with that?

but neways, yea i believe that eurocom is over-pricing their laptops because they appeal to canadian customers. since they are based in canada, it'll be a lot quicker to ship, but the shipping prices will always have gst/pst, so there's no luck there.
i guess the only good thing would be saving on the actual shipping charges from the delivery company, and the shorter wait.
you would still have to wait for the order to process and for the system to build, but i guess you'd save yourself a few days. personally i recommend xoticpc/pnb, i haven't personally dealt with them (although i am in talks with justin w. from xoticpc about my new laptop), but i have heard great things about both companies.
good luck -

Once it's all sorted out I'll post here for sure. I'll probably make a new thread for it.
In the mean time, this is what I know. I asked one of the sales reps at XoticPC (Justin W) about it and he pointed me to this somewhat old thread.
In the mean time, I've been trying to confirm all that info at CBSA. So for I haven't been able to get hold of them, but all the bits and pieces I've found do not contradict what's in that thread.
After that I chatted with JustinW again and he told me that when we buy online we do not pay local sales taxes from the US.
The end result is that as of right now, what I know is that the costs associated with importing a laptop from the US are the following (for my laptop, from XoticPC):
- Cost of laptop (USD)
- Shipping: If you choose UPS express, you don't pay a customs brokerage fee (which seems to be worth it).
- Currency conversion cost (this is what I still need to find out)
- Local taxes (for me in Ontario its GST+PST=14%)
It should be noted that a major thing I noticed is that we apparently pay NO import duties on laptops. This is what I'm trying to get CBSA to confirm, but they're being a pain about it. The last thing you want is for them to slap a 10% duty on it.
All in all it's still several hundred dollars ahead of Eurocom's pricing (which is before taxes and shipping). -
ooops. sorry all i just read the "m860tu" my previous post was on the d901c model, but still pretty outrageous... i don't think velocity micro has the m860tu yet
again sorry for the mistake -

Another thing to note is that if you get the M860 from Eurocom, you're not buying from Sager. I'm pretty sure you'll be stuck with Eurocom's support and guarantees, while if you get it through a Sager retailer...you get their support which is known to be good.
I haven't heard any specific complaints about their support, but I haven't heard any of the superlatives that get thrown around about XoticPC and PNB either. -
That's a good point I'm trying to decide who would be better to order from as well. All the border and shipping stuff is getting confusing though especially since when i was on eurocoms website I configured two identical 8660s one with eurocom and one with xotic and they were pretty close in price.

Edit: someguyoverthere, i can confirm your question. america and canada have a joint agreement in terms of computers. No customs to be paid on them between the two countries.

TNX x100 for this info!! my choice will certainly go for xiotpc after reading this... just waiting for someone that already brought something to be sure. -
Thanks for the info Heliosvector now if i could just figure out something about this brokering fee everyone talks about
-
brokerage fee is something that you have to pay the delivery company for transporting it to you by land. You dont pay this if you get it delivered by air. im 85% sure of that.

Oh Canada, Our home and>>>>> Well you all know the rest. Heck it surprises me how little our brothers to the south actually know about us.
Heck I was in a engineering meeting with other drilling people, and one drilling engineer asked me how I got involved in the oil and gas industry living in Canada. I stumbled and answered Because we drillig 16,000 to 20,000 wells a year up there. lol.
And U of A is a top notch Uni. -
I hate you, scratch that...I hate oil.
-
EDIT: Anyone still able to recognize a joke around here? Of course Canada is a separate country, with a better currency, to boot (thanks, Bernanke). -
UMMMMMMMM BEER.
Yes but we get shafted on just about any retail purchase you could imagine. And even though we have all that oil try filling up your truck with out taking out second mortgage. Can you Say 6 bucks a gallon.

I'm pretty sure it just comes down to:
UPS Express
GST
PST
Laptop -
