Tomorrow is the estimated arrival date for my new Sager 9750. Anticipating that I might be toying with it at about this time tomorrow night, I got to wondering what is the first thing others of you do when your new laptop arrives. Do you tear into the box and go straight to the heart of the matter? Or do you methodically piece apart the package, opening and reading the manual or quick-start card before you unwrap the machine? Anyone care to share your rituals?

And oh! Even more importantly, what do you do to break in a new laptop? Once you first press that power button, where do you go from there?

IMO, just leave it on 24x7 for about a week. if anything is going to show up, it will be within this period.
congratz..and have fun with the games. -
Well I usually install Firefox first on a new machine.
The first things I usually do are run 3DMark 2005, PC Mark and HDTune.
With these Sager screen resolutions, you're probably going to spend a fair bit of time messing with font sizes for web browsing. And put Cleartype on!

Excellent ideas. Thank you! I was not aware of Clear Type settings for XP. I went ahead and set it for the computer I'm using at work. Wow! Quite a difference.
Albsterama--When you say leave it running 24/7 for a week, do you mean full on, or do you enable stand-by or sleep modes when idle?
Also, where does one get the benchmark programs--3DMark, etc.?
Thanks again. -

Albsterama's right - I do the same thing. When you first get a computer, it's good to do a 'burn in' - aka run it and make sure everything is right.
Just set the computer to 'Always On' in the Control Panel (Power Options), and leave it there. It won't turn off that way.
I like www.majorgeeks.com for the benchmarking programs, or you can just go to FutureMark's website (they make PCMark, 3DMark, etc.)

ffice & games and leave the screen saver run when you're not. Reboot if you have to but just DON'T TURN OFF the notebook for a whole week. Also have mobmeter running or rivatuner on to watch the temperatures of the CPU and GPU...
Also, check out webshots.com for some really nice background images and screensavers (they have some really gorgeous 1920x1200 res pics), if you're into nature scenes and stuff, if not...ignore.
Have fun with it...
