I want to pull out my DVD combo drive and replace it with an HDD caddy. I feel like I need a 3rd HDD for my photography, but I don't want to completely ditch my combo drive either. I want to keep it around on my desk or in my bag just in case.
Does anyone here know if such a thing exists?

You want to look for an external enclosure for laptop optical drive. They do make them.

I used this one. It also comes external enclosure for your optical drive and the HDD caddy. Works great so far !

Or you could purchase an external HDD disk.

Thank you!

No, because I prefer not to carry anymore stuff in my bag. Just my laptop and mouse. It's either the optical drive or an extra hard drive and I don't use the optical drive that often. I leave one power supply at work and one at home.

I"ve gone without an optical drive for 5-6 months, havent needed it yet. You can download pretty much anything now. In the rare case i do need to burn a disc I just use the good ol desktop.

When i need something i pretty much use a pen drive, bootable or not depending on my needs, as yes its way faster to make it a bootable device then burning a dvd and way way faster when installing something like win7 for example

That's explains my case exactly. The only reason I bought my laptop with an optical drive was for times I might need to burn stuff. As a photographer, I often burn pics to give them out, but even then it's rare.

If i have some I need to get pics to someone I'll load them up on sendspace.com which is free and you an upload a .zip file up to 300MB. Once its there just give them the URL it gives you and they can download them direct. I've head dropbox works good too but havent used it myself. -
It costs ~$30 for an enclosure for your existing laptop DVD drive, or ~$30 to buy a brand new slim USB external DVD drive. Personally I'd just go buy a new drive and chuck the laptop one. Here's one for example:

I thought about that, but I found an enclosure for $8. It's just going to sit in my closet anyway until the day I need it so $8 is a much better deal.
External case for the DVD drive?
