This morning I decided to push my 6970 to its limits and I believe I have hit it. Could anyone else post their OC results?

Okay, I updated the GPU drivers to 11.7 and gained almost 500 points with the same overclock..... I'm liking these new drivers. :)

and this is why I think the 6990 will be more OC able then the 580m ...

Great OC - my 6970m´s didn´t overclock that good on memory chips...
Would love to see the result on CROSSFIRE 6970m´s with that overclocking ;)

Somebody give me a machine with xfire 6970's and I'll OC the hell out of them. :)
My OC seems to be stuck at 895/1100... Even 1MHZ over that and it becomes unstable... I have never seen a 485m get 15k gpu on vantage. Has anyone else seen it?

If the 6990 is "just" an unlocked 6970, why in the world would a 6990 be so OC friendly? Isnt it just an overclocked 6970? Sure, its got more SPs, but those consume power to an equal degree as overclocking?

The 6990M is an underclocked 6870.

Not unlocked. They are basically desktop 6870s (not 6970s) that run slower (underclocked). Far fewer SPs than an actual 6970. Far lower clocks than desktop version for heat and power consumption and package requirements.

Those temps are amazing with those clocks, only 76C! Nicely done.

As to the 6990m, it is an underclocked Desktop 6870. The 6970M is an underclocked Desktop 6850. Both use the barts xt core, but the SP and ROPs will be higher, so maybe more power/heat in addition to more work getting done per clock cycle.

The two mobile cards will probably have similar frequency overclocking potential overall, being nearly identical architectures (Barts XT 40nm, same ram, etc).

I'd wager Eldaren is near the ceiling as far as frequencies for either.

You're trying to evade what I'm insinuating, aren't you?

    One is a 6870, the other a 6850, I'm well aware.

What I'm getting at is they are both the same architecture. They both fit in the same slot. They both have the same power and cooling capacity available. And although the increase of SPs might not increase TDP perfectly linearly as the increase in clock, for a small (~15%) increase, I think we can approximate it as such. If we couldn't, and more SPs were that much superior, why not just smack 2000 of them on a card.

All I'm suggesting is that with performance this close, and them being virtually idendical cards (in architecture), it seems the 6990 is to the 6970 what the 580 is to the 485- a stock overclock. Those tend to come with an increased quality in the chip, sure. But I'd still expect the 6970 to have a lot more open space upwards than the 6990.

Or am I completely off here? I'm just going on past experience (6800 & 6800 ultra) and common sense.

You're a bit off here... the 485m and the 580m are virtually the same card, only the 580m seems to be higher binned, maybe some very small changes in the architecture.

The 6990m isn't just higher clocked, it comes with a not unimpressive higher shader count, therefore the 6990m will run hotter and consume more power than the 6970m.
Looking at benchmarks of some unlocked ES 6970m with 1120 shaders you can see that the additional shaders give quite a nice boost, a regular 6970m needs to be clocked about 100MHz higher on the core to get the same performance in vantage...
Considering that the 6990m architecture has some addtional improvements and has higher stock clocks, the difference between the 6970m and 6990m is considerable bigger than the difference between the 485m and 580m.

@OP: Impressive overclock, I've never seen a Clevo card with such high clocks... though the Dell 6970m can usually get higher, especially on the VRAM.
I have yet to hit 15k GPU vantage with my 6970m... (Sapphire).

So what's the difference between the Dell and Clevo 6970m? I thought it was just different heatsinks?

The Dell version uses Hynix VRAM modules, they can easily run at 1200MHz, and as far as I seen on the M17x benchmark thread, the Dell version is usually able to clock higher than most Clevo cards... at least I haven't seen a lot of Clevo cards running at 880MHz and more.

Yes, back when I got my NP8150 I did some benchmarks in the owners thread with the 485M.

    Please see my post here.

I didn't push it to the limits but with my highest stable overclock I got 17415 3DMarks on Vantage. I haven't tried since all the driver updates though.

Interesting... So would it be safe to say the same is true of the 6990m? And is it possible to run a Dell card in a clevo machine?

Probably yes, we'll see soon. And about the compatibility, I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Most Clevo cards work very well in Alienware systems. Somtimes there are slight problems, e.g. Powerplay doesn't work when you put a Clevo 5870m in a M15x.
But it seems that Clevo and Dell use the same OEM pins and stick pretty much to the MXM standard, so a Dell card should work in a Clevo system as well. What could happen is that you loose fan control, but you can't know until someone tries it.

Well if it means the Dell is more overclockable than the clevo 6990m then I would be willing to try it. Where would you recommend buying one from when they are released?

Great results, man! What was your room temps, any cooling pads used? 76C on GPU seems way low considering an OC and 15" form factor...

Generally it seems, that the Dell cards can overclock better, but you probably know that there's always some luck with overclocking... you might as well get a card that does overclock worse than the average... It seems you have a very good 6970m.

Getting a Dell card isn't as easy as getting a Clevo card. You have to call Dell and be a bit lucky with the rep at the phone. The other option is the NBR marketplace or ebay.

How would I ask dell for a new card? Is there a way to be tricky? I'm hoping it would be cheaper on ebay or the forums...

Well, the easiest will be if you tell them the part nr., otherwise just ask for the card, but make sure they know what you want... not that you end up with a desktop part, lol.
It also depends on where you're located, in some countries they'll only sell you parts if you have a Dell system that is configurable with the part you want to buy.

17.5k on gpu is pretty nice. I managed to get 5Mhz more on the core last night and got my gpu up to 15200. I'll post a pic when I get home this evening. :D The 6990m better be able to get 18.5k....

I've seen a couple of GTX 485Ms get 15k GPU score in Vantage when clocked at around 700mhz for core. I think they can hit 16k GPU with an overvolt.

However, the 6970M does better than the 485M in 3dmark11.

Doesn't seem to work with the card, I tried it with modifying the VBIOS, but the card automatically sets the voltage back. Tried every VBIOS which I had access to, even a beta VBIOS (which bricked my card, had to desolder and reprogram the VBIOS eeprom to make it working again, lol)
    You can undervolt it though.

I'll probably try a little overvolt mod when I find time, should be fun to see how far I can push the card.

I've seen some Dell cards running at speeds above 900MHz core.
