I bet, especially since it seems to be pretty deep/early in the boot. Is there a thread about it on the forums?

Just signing in to say thank you to the tc. Ive just experienced the exact same issue, (randomly shut off, then had weird graphical problems on the bios screen when I reboot) and its just been over a year for me since purchase too. Wouldnt be surprised if our cards were from a same defective batch. It was real convenient for me that yiu found and posted all the relevant info for me here.

Since it seems to be cheaper to get the card elsewhere, does anyone know if malibal will install the card for me if I send the new card with my busted laptop, even if I dont buy the card from them(I bouggt the laptop from them so my service warranty is with them)? I dont know how to do it myself and would like to get it checked for other issues whike im at it.

So before swinging for the 7970m I decided to double check my bank account levels and let's just say tuition hit harder than I was expecting, so that's gonna be a bit out of price range. So here is the current new plan, let me know what you guys think.

I can pick up a 675m for about $250 (which unfortunately is now about as much as I can swing). It is technically a alienware replacement card, so the heatsinks won't fit quite right, but here malibal was actually pretty sweet in that they are sending me the proper heatsinks (and some ic diamond as well) for free to help me out, as well as a disk of the proper vbios to flash onto the card.

    A few questions:
Malibal said it would work, and I trust them (kinda), do you guys agree?
What kind of performance change will I see? (from the 6990m, not the 7970m, that one is unfortunately off the table)

    Thanks!

Also, does going with the 675m mean my HDMI will continue working?

the 675m is basically identical to a 580m, thus u should only see a few % of a performance change compared to ur previous 6990m, if any at all. provided the modded vbios works as intended, hdmi should work on ur machine :)

It's a decent replacement if you find it cheap.

hey dirksoccer, if you dont mind me asking, how did you manage to procure the 675m for $250? are you getting it from malibal? do you by any chance know if they would do this price for others (i.e. myself) or were there some sort of special conditions between you and them?

Just a couple quick questions regarding this replacement 675m...
1- its technically an alienware card, but when I was looking around for guides to flashing the vbios I saw what looked like a ton of alienware people using clevo 675m drivers (usually to flash into their 580m's), so I started wondering if I will even need to change the vbios?
2- if I will need to change them, can you point me to a guide on how to do it? (I'm decently skilled with computers, but mainly to the point that I feel comfortable modifying things, not writing my own stuff by any means. Is a vbios flash something I can handle as a mid-to-entry level geek?)

@OP, hope your replacement solution works out nicely!

It's been kind of a sad week over here too lol. first, MALIBAL gave me the wrong bios for my p150hm. I had to recover using the stock Clevo bios (thanks mr. Prema) :) Then just tonight my 6990m gave out. The laptop screen is blue from POST onwards, and once I get into arch everything is blue with artifacts.

I've had this laptop since September 2011. One thing that is interesting is there is no blue using an HDMI monitor. However, there are a few very small artifacts. For others having this issue, have you tried plugging into external monitor? I'm curious as to how "dead" is "dead".

I am out of warranty as you are. Since it kind of works with an external monitor, I will tough it out for now. Perhaps reflow it this weekend. I was very disappointed with the boys from Nevada this week. Might be time for a new toy. :)

Interesting. My 6990m gave out least month. Never tried an external monitor.but mine just wouldn;t go to the logon screen. Just a black screen with occasional blue artifacts staring at me. Luckily, I had purchased a 2 year parts warranty. :)

So I just got my laptop back from malibal (shipped it and the GPU to them and they did the install for free!), and it working great! ...almost
1- the HDMI isn't working. Is this a hardware thing or fixable via BIOS or something like it?

**edit: the cable was bad, HDMI works! Issue 2 still struggling though**

2- the newest drivers won't install. Its listed as a 675m in device manager, but I can't update past the ones malibal installed for it (which are only 1 release behind, so its not a huge deal at the moment).

Any advice/solutions for either of those?
    Thanks!

u probably need drivers with modded .inf files for the 675M, otherwise it wont be properly recognized on ur machine. head over to laptopvideo2go.com, they should provide what u need :)

If you're going to buy a new card you might aswell try a reflow. I've done it 3 times on my 6990m and it's temporarily fixed it each time, lasts a few weeks but still at the same performance :p
Just burns through the thermal paste though as I'm cleaning it off each time. Still cheaper than a new card.

nothing really :) worst thing that could happen is that the driver ure trying to mod gets messed up and thus wont recognize ur card properly, thus doesnt get installed :p

I was not so lucky. My 6990m failed after about 1.5 years. Of course after the warranty expired....

So I ponied up for the 580m instead!
