    Hello!

I'm probably going to order a p150hm next week with a 2670QM and a 6990m. I'm curious how you experience the fan noise with this setup? Mostly thinking about the idle noise, or when watching a 1080p movie.

And how is the temperature on the chassis? I currently have an Envy 14 and after some gaming I almost burn myself when touching the places above the GPU...

    Thanks!

I have seen a lot of threads about 6990M fan noise concerns.

Just buy the machine. Its good, its not noisier than a 580M. Its acceptable under laod.

Pay some extra for thermal paste and forget about excess noise.

P.S. Temps on the chassis are COOL. That means cool to the touch, no burning, oozing, sweating or whatever. This is Clevo, its known to be good. Not like some burnt down Acer or whatever that burns you when you get it under load.

The GPU itself tends to run a little warmer than the NVidia counterparts, but the unit itself stays pretty cool. As Bob suggested, it is a good idea to get the upgraded thermal compound since that will help with the slightly higher operating temps.

As for the fan noise, we don't get a lot of complaints on that particular issue with this setup. Even under full load the noise isn't out of control, but it will be noticeable in a quiet room.

The noise is probably my biggest gripe with my system (p150hm w/ 6990m). At idle, the turns off for ~10 seconds, then turns on for 30-60 seconds, then turns off etc etc. if it stayed either on or off, it would be okay, but the cycling bugs the hell out of me.

The heat of the actual system is fantastic. Under load, it's cool to the touch everywhere, except for the warm air blowing out the back. The fan does get pretty loud though.

I see, and there's no way to fix it? Like a bios setting or something?

It's the bios fan tables that are causing the cycling. If it hits above 50c the fans will turn up in speed. When it gets below 50c it turns down. (those are just examples, not sure what the temps really are) The only way to control the fans is with the Fn + 1 combination, but that only turns them between auto and full blast.

Excellent questions OP. I'm in the market for a new laptop and I've pretty much decided on a Clevo of some sort. I've lost video cards on my last two laptops and my current one is almost dead due to heat issues. I'm at a point where I really can't play games with it as it shuts off after a few minutes. Consequently, I'm a little wary when it comes to laptop cooling w/ higher end video cards. I'm trying to avoid having another laptop die after a year or two due to heat issues.

Noise is also a factor, but less than heat for me. Are there methods other than thermal paste that would really cool down a laptop? Since the current higher end cards haven't been out long enough to really know how they'll hold up after a year or two, it would seem prudent to add additional cooling if possible.
