Hey guys, my 8690 has been great ever since I bought it in 2009. I took it over to my GF's house, and she has a 3 year old. As far as I know nothing happened to it, but who knows. So anyway, one fan spins up on post, but then stops right around 5 seconds in. the CPU fan doesn't spin at all, but I did swap the fans and both fans did spin up for the 5 seconds or so. At first though, one fan would run the whole time, but the other would not, but this last time I checked, it won't even run more than 5 seconds. I can get into windows, but obviously I haven't since, I don't even want to risk any dangerous temps. So what could it be, motherboard? or possibly some type of fan controller in the bios? I don't really know much about this end of the laptop tech.

maybe the 3 year old repasted it with some amazing thermal paste and you don't even need fans running to cool it :)

haha, but have you looked at fan speeds in the bios? maybe they actually are running but just a bit slower?

I would check your temps before you get too worried. If it gets hot enough that it's dangerous, the machine should automatically downclock or power off entirely.

So, check this out. I take a look at my battery, and it's swollen. So I bet that has something to do with it. It won't even detect the battery, but when i plugged the battery in, the GPU fan didn't stop spinning this time. I ran an older game, temps were fine, then I hit that touch button with a circled M, and I heard the CPU fan kick on  ok so that was strange...so I let it run that way for a while, but I think it's some sort of power saver mode, so the game saw a large drop in FPS. Well I turn it off and a few seconds later, the CPU fan kicks on by itself.... . So I don't know if it's just something with the fan controller?

Ok update, i just tried it again, but this time while just on the desktop. So this time I hit the M, and heard the CPU fan spin up, but when I turned it off, the CPU fan spun up a bit faster but then just shut off.

Ok, so apparently this button with the circled M is a Mute interface button?? I don't understand how this has anything to do with fans, but why does it slow my game down.
