Fans running loud on P950HR

While replacing the display cable, I loosen up the CPU fan so I can blow out all the dust from the fan. In the process, I also bent the heat pipe a bit as seen in the pictures below so now it's permanently popped up:

Is it because of the bent heat pipe that I'm seeing higher temperatures now with a fan that runs louder? What can I do fix the heat pipe and fan issue? Should I get new paste like that IC Diamond paste?

 

Yes, a bent heatpipe will not work as well much like bending a water pipe.

 

Try gently readjusting the heatsink until the fins are flush with the fan again. You may need to unscrew it from the CPU (and reapply your compound) to get it right.

 

I think I screwed myself with stripping one of the screws for the fan over at the CPU. Also cna't seem to unbend the heat pipes unless I need to take the whole thing out? Seems one of the screws have been stripped too....

 

First get yourself a correct screwdriver bits (PH1 for most screws in my case and you can get a set in every hardware store) and new thermal paste (IC Diamond, Gelid GC-Extreme, Kryonaut). Perhaps even some new screws if you have been really passionate with stripping them off. Then take the heatsink off and bend it gently, install it back on to see if it sits flush with the fans. When you are happy with the result then take it appart one last time, check that all the thermalpads are in right place and apply your fresh paste in clean surface.

 

Might be the time to have a word with your reseller for help.

 

At this point I'm deliberating if I should just upgrade to a new laptop using my tax refund given that I will need to buy a damaged screw remover tool for really small screws, new Clevo screws kit, and thermal paste. At the very least my p950hr is still usable... just louder and maybe slightly slower at startup. If the P960 provide better thermals and lower fan noise with the new RTX Nvidia cards, I'm going to lean more toward upgrading.

 

In terms of value it's still very much worth getting it fixed.

 

What striped remover tool would I use though for a screw that small on the cooling fan and motherboard? Also where would I get replacement screws?

 

What kind of searching have you done?

Search on "tiny screw extractor", "tiny screw easy out" or "laptop screw extractor". There seem to be plenty of tools that seem to do the trick. If you don't feel you can handle it yourself, is there a jeweler or watchmaker nearby? They may have tiny tools for extraction as well.

In regards to replacement, do you see anything on the motherboard or plastic casing which identifies the screw size? For example, here's a semi-inexpensive kit -

Have you tried the rubberband method (google it). Alternatively a jewellers triangle file or a hobby drill with a very thin cutting disc to cut a slot, just make sure you tape off the surrounding areas to stop metal dust getting into machine.

I have also removed a screw with epoxy glue, put a bit of glue on stripped head and use another screw head down, so head to head. Leave till glue has cured and then use pillars to unscrew. May work for you.

Think the screws are M2*4L (but the service should tell you for sure)

Thanks for the docs the screws are indeed M2*4L. Well guess I'll give it a shot then. Going to order the Alden 4507P Micro Grabit, Eopower screws, and Arctic MX-4 to try my luck.

Okay for whatever reason. The fans have stabilized on my laptop now. Temperatures seem to hover around 60 Celsius. I just received all my Amazon order today too.... so I guess I shouldn't bother doing anything unless the fan and temperature gets out of control again?

Sounds like something is not happy with the cooler be it the pipe or mounting.

 

For now I'm just going to leave it the way it is. The cooling and fans are stabilized mostly. Only on sparse occasions will the fan shoot up.

 

Could be the kink is causing issues as certain angles or loads.
