Which of the infamous brands should be the fastest and coolest hdd for the M860TU? Seagate, Hitachi, WD, or any else?

hi kevin. there was a comparison in one of the threads on here and hopefully whoever posted it will be able to link to it.

im running the western digital black 320gb 7200rpm and am getting 49-50c when just brousing and and 51c while gaming which i think are great and im not using a cooler. you have to take into account what part of the world you are from as temperatures do vary with ambient room temps.

it still goes upto 60-61c while running a virus scan and defragging and this is normal on all harddrives as the fans never kick in.
i suppose one way to keep them lower while doing the above is to run a game at the same time and then fans will go on high rev.

Do not go with the 500gb 7200.4 versions of the Seagate. Seems like alot(!) of people are having troubles with them making a clicking noise making the entire system lag for a second. Mine included.

Oh ok, yeah I hope somebody can provide the link to that :)

Well, I have the Western Digital 320GB 7200 RPM, I don't know if that's the same as your drive but damn it reaches 67C when I'm just burning into a CD. I really think it's a problem with this drive that's why I'm gonna get rid of it and buy a new one :)

Thanks for the heads up :) How about the 320GB 7200.4 are they good?

67c for burning is way too high. does it go down as soon as youve finished the burn?
my nexus has been on for 2 hours now and im still on 47c
have you got the intel matrix storage manager loaded and also what graphic drivers are you running. im running 186.81. hard drive for first 2 days was 53-55c but once they settle in its only touching 50c

Yeah, really way too high. It does go down to about 58C.

Yes I have all the latest drivers including the chipset and Matrix Storage Manager and I also have 186.81 installed.

    Thanks kev.

By the way, I'm wondering how does the 3-year warranty policy of Seagate works. Does it start from the day you buy the drive from the reseller? Or from the day the reseller buys it from Seagate?

I use 2x 320GB Scorpio blacks, and my temps never exceed 55C when gaming. Defragging and the like, they hit 60C but that is the highest they'll go. Their temperature falls 10C once completing defragging, virus scanning, etc.

i would off thought it would be the day you buy it from the reseller or install it in your laptop as its only sitting on a shelf in the wharehouse and not doing anything.

Weird, the reseller gave me a serial number of a Seagate drive and I've checked in the Seagate website. The expiration is Aug 8 2012. So I'm losing precious warranty time if I don't buy it soon.

The reseller told me that it's normal. I don't know if that's true or BS.

But you have a laptop with better cooling system :) So I don't know man.

Are Hitachis necessarily better than Seagates?

I have the 7200.3 320gb from Seagate, and no clicking noise so far with some 48c idling 53c gaming and 57c defragging/virus scan. Although mine is last generation, I would recommend the 320gb 7200.4.

All hard drives have the clicking noise. That's the sound of the actuator parking itself.
