Hey guys, as you may have heard i bought a Mobility 5870 pulled out of a W870cu and ive got around to modding the heatsink, so now i have in my hands a fully working D900F with a Mobility Radeon 5870!
Since i will change my signature, i have to put this down for later...
The specs of my Clevo D900F:
17" WUXGA 1920x1200 Matte Screen
Mobility Radeon 5870
Intel Core i7-950 @ 3,33GHz with Turbo Boost
6GB DDR3 RAM 1333MHz
Intel X25-M G2 SSD
2x Seagate Momentus 7200.3 250GB (Raid0)
BD-ROM Optical Drive
Arctic Cooling MX-3 on CPU & GPU
The thread at my first attempts, when i only had a borrowed card and didnt want to cut up my heatsink, since that one was too expensive to buy, can be found HERE.
The parts that i cut off (info on what had to be cut is also in my previous thread) were actualy soldered on with some silver solder (infact most of the heatsink has that solder), and when i started cutting, they heated enough to just fall off, so my work was infact really easy - all i had to do was to polish the surface where the solder was. I positioned the pads according to the 5870 layout, put the heatsink in and made sure it has enough pressure on the card for the thermal goo (mx-3) to spread and the pads to have good contact.
I installed the drivers and looked at the temperatures, and voila!
Its idling at a perfectly nice temperature, and as youll see it also doesnt get toasty after all the benchmars i ran!
*Please note that i used Fn+1 at some benchmarks to see and to demonstrate to you the difference between letting the fans go auto and making them go to full speed during testing. Should be noticable at which i used it and at which i didnt, but if you want i can write that down too.
*Also, ambient temperature in my room while doing these tests was 28.4C, so thats something to note too.
Now remember, i am doing this as a comparison to the gtx 280m (that i ran at stock clocks for a gtx 285m - with my modded vbios that i am using) and also to compare to the new gtx 480m that was only tested with a desktop cpu like this so far, so we have a pretty fair comparison.
The benchmarks of the gtx 480M can be found HERE.
Now for the pictures & benchmarks:

*Update: Furmark Xtreme burning test tops out at 93C after 13 minutes and doesnt go over that after (ran it for 30 minutes).
*Update: Per request, Vantage overclocked at 800/1100.

As you can see, the 5870 performs considerably better than the 280m running 285m clocks (pretty much the same as having a gtx 285m since theyre identical cards, only difference being the clocks and memory timings), and performs just as well at dx 9 or dx 10 benchmarks than the gtx 480m (ironacally got the EXACT same score in Vantage, and ALMOST the exact same fps for Crysis), but lacks behind a bit when tesselation is enabled, but considering the already unplayable fps at those games that the 480m has the lead, it really makes no difference and at least in my oppinion, buying a 480m instead of a 5870 is a waste of money (not to mention the 480m also runs hotter and eats up much more power).
This is it for the benchmarks for now, since this laptop is getting a new owner very soon, so if you will want more, you will have to ask him (cant disclose yet who it is, since i do not know if he wants the attention or not, he can speak up himself if he intends to).

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Very interesting and illuminating. Man, that 950 is power hungry under load. +Rep for the project.
-
Great job!
No other comments needed, IMHO -
Great job HellCry
...
-
Anyone else considering this modification for their D900F now ^^?
-
very nice! any chance of seeing some vantage runs?
-
It's there among the pics
@HellCry,
Yeah, I'd consider it 100% if had a D900F. -
Plus+ for you man awesome, i wish and i hope the buyer does the same thing and see some more benchmarks. I would love to have a D900F.

Updated with furmark xtreme burning test and ive played DDO on max settings with max aa and af for 3 hours now and the temperatures there topped out at 77C to also have a comparison at actual gaming.
-
+rep -
So they're both were ran on two different systems? The 480M by notebookcheck, and the 5870M in HellCry's system?
-
Yep, but that's the same system - D900F
-
-
(and of course the GPU) -
Same Windows? Drivers?
-
Excellent work. +rep
-
-
And what score would that be?
-
-
with a lessor cpu at that.
edit:
mandrake broke 10k?
damn, i need to read more...lol
i just looked...nope, he did not..at least not yet or he is holding out. -
-
yeah, that was something there on the 260. -
Overclocked 800/1100. What do you think?
Could probably go higher, since Mandrake went all the way to 880/1200 but i really dont feel so comfortable doing that since this is for sale..
And Mandrake got P10679
Link -
Nice score, the clocks can go higher. I myself have gone as high as 930/1150, so yea there is some room to work with.
-
-
Yeah i was just going to say he broke 10k on the GPU which was just insane ... I remember he called me and told me he had it packed into the meat freezer
...
-
and was talking about his gpu score not his over all.
and yours at 8800 is looking very promising....but if your selling it.....then your stuck in the middle...lol go for the gpu record or wonder if you could have gotten it....tisk....tisk...tisk....decisions, decisions, decisions..... -
He got 10002 just on gpu score? Link?
-
Nm John beat me to it ...
-
-
There were icicles on the thing when he was done
...
It truly is an amazing score though ... -
i had to hunt that damn link down! lol
i was hoping you were going to post it...lol
that's two more names to add to the list of over clockers..
mr moo, vicioususmc and ichime...damn, when you start searching for stuff, it brings back all the good old days. -
Mike got 10067 for Vantage on his 8690.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/6346215-post3662.html -
i just looked and i dont see his GPU at 10067 or am i missing something?
side note:
talking about the gpu score only. -
-
Hellcry you are my new hero.
Great job bro, + rep
You just helped answer some very important questions. -
Thanks to Hellcry, I will do others benchmark
-
Hahaha, nice!
You got yourself quite a beast!
You can't stop now! -
Yep, its packed so im done with the benchmarking.
-
those crysis benchmarks are false.
16fps average at 1920x1080 veryhigh dx10 ???????
literally worse than the hd4850 and gtx 260m.
Can't wait to see "real" crysis benchmark scores. its possible those scores were done in battery mode.
edit. talking about notebook checks benchmarks not yours.
excellent work though guy, well done -
-
Hell Cry, what version of the card did you use and where did you get it? I am deffently going to do this mod asap!!!
I am going to assume you got it from rjtech , and in ur first post you said
W87U, but the only one I see is the W87xCU which I hope is the same as the one you used.
The only versions of this card I could find are for the W87xCU and the W87xCU. So do you know the difference between the two?
Either way please inform of what card and where and great job btw!!! Can't wait to do this asap!!! -
chuckdside, why are you wanting to spend 3 times the money on a card that as fast as the 5870? Just curious?
-
My desktop 4850 runs Crysis maxed out very well as well, until I notice I'm using dx9 to run, when ran the dx10 version, FPS drops drastically. -
Good job with the modification

I think you meant w860cu and w870cu, and if so, than i think those cards are identical, but there are also other notebooks that use it (like the g73jh, and the x7200 will also have it).
If you have the tools (or a friend to lend you use of a workshop like me), than go ahead, but a reminder, that besides the heatsink mod, you also have to file or cut off the screw holes on the 5870 (pictures are in the first thread i made about this, link is in the first post of this thread), since they are higher than at the 280m and the heatsink will than not contact the card if that is not done, and you need to be REAL carefull when doing that since 1 slip when you are cutting (these screw holes are just so close to the chips it takes real patience and a steady hand to cut them...) and you can go buy a new gpu (i also added some copper shims and on top some paper shims to add some pressure on the gpu core and memory, but i forgot to take pictures of that, i was already very stressed out at the time since i had to try over 10 times till i finally got perfect contact). -
Wish you posted more game benchmarks besides crysis. I want to see if using a desktop gpu over these i7 mobile gpus makes that much of a difference as far as fps...I still think it's the gpu that bottlenecks.
