depends on the gpu
480/470/5970/5870/5850
are still far better than mobile xfire/sli.
edit: did some checking
mobile and desktop over clocked
it is = to or better than
5770x3/5750x3 or x4

The new owner will do more benchies, i just didnt have enough time.

It look like according to the recent review on the gtx480m. Both hd5870 and 480m have the same vantage points. Do we have enough data to compare apples to apples?
Since clevo d900f ati 5870m vs clevo d901f nvidia 480m? -
That's the closest comparison you can get so far
-
They are actually both D900F as the 901 would indicate a cosmetic change (ie colour) rather than a hardware change.
-
Again - except my cpu being 0,13ghz faster, the systems are the same.
-
We really need a chart that compares the 480m and 5870mr with same ram and cpu. This reduce the amount of research we have to do.
-
I will receive the laptop in few days (currently laptop is in austria, between Slovenia (Hellcry country) and France (mine).
Just tell me what benchmarks do you need. I will do this this week end normally. -
The desktop 5870 actually beats the desktop GTX 480 in Vantage, despite the latter having a decent advantage in most games, so I'd definitely like to see more gaming benchmarks for this system. Also consider these results for Crysis, where the desktop 5870 also takes a slight lead overall, though in Warhead the 480 seems to be stronger. I know these are the desktop cards, but my point is that there's a lot of variability and biases between different benchmarks, so further testing is very much in order.
There definitely isn't enough data yet for a definitive conclusion with regards to overall performance. Ideally, both cards would be tested by the same reviewer in the same system. I would like to see is the use of graphs of framerates over time, or at the very least numbers for minimum framerates as well as the averages. As for the tests, games like BattleForge, Metro 2033, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, perhaps in both DX10 and DX11 modes for both cards, would be nice to see.
Obviously, all those suggestions together is way too much to ask for, but the more, the better. -
I think, in the end 480M might be still a little bit stronger. But for me the biggest question is the load temps. If it runs a few degrees warmer than 5870 - I'm out of the potential buyers' camp.
-
my question is why waste so much power consuption and heat with 2 GB of Gddr5 when 1 GB is enough ?
-
because it's 1GB more than what ATI is offering.
-
who needs cross fire then
-
For CUDA programs!
-
Pshhh ....cuda
1% of earth and .01% of 901 owners -
They would do better just cutting it down to 1gb and lower some prices down from their ridiculous pricing.
-
Yeah its just to expensive for the average person.... Clearly based on how luke warm the interest is around here is more then enough proof its overpriced...
Its really to bad because there should be TONS of buzz about this card/tech .... -
So far only Clevo is offering those cards, no wonder they are overpriced, what would you do if you offer a mobile card that no other manufacturer puts into their laptops at the moment? I expect the price to drop once Alienware and maybe even consumer brands like ASUS and MSI put those cards in their laptops. But I think we will only see the GTX 480M in Alienware laptops. In any case, Nvidia should and probably will just bring out a mobile GF104 with 336 shader (only 4% less than GTX 465) and 256 or 192 bit memory interface, based on the TDP relation between GTX 465 and GTX 480M the GF104 based card 336 shaders would have a TDP of 75 - 80W depending on which memory interface is used.
-
It's also that the actual implementation of this card in a laptop is expensive resulting in a laptop which few people will be able to afford even if the GPU price goes down. For this reason I doubt any manufacturer will actually make a laptop that can cool a 100W TDP GPU (besides Clevo and Alienware). For most people a 75W card is more than enough and much more affordable.
-
Yes veyr nice, but nvidia didi design this generation with general purpose computing in mind.
-
Will the GTX480m heat sink fit on the 5870m with or without modding? I'm wondering if the temps of the 5870m would run drastically cooler if this was done.
-
Id say youd need to do a fair bit of modding by a quick glance of photos of placement of chips and coils on both gpus and the heatsink, but i cant say for sure since i dont have the laptop or either of those cards in possesion anymore.
